Coloring/ Graying an Line Image

To whom this may concern
In my black and white comic book series, I add grays to the images The
grays seem to really add a new element to the artwork. At first I just did
my line drawings with concept knowing I was going to add grays. So, 90% of
all shapes are closed. Just click in the area, and fill with gray.
This process seem to work about 80% of the time. On occasion for reason
beyond my understanding sometimes the shape would not fill completely. I
would have go in fill each pixel. Very time consuming. On other occasion
were I inked tiny details, that would be wiped out by adding grays.
    At <A HREF="http://www.spxpo.com/";>SPX</A> and <A

several individuals attempted to explain that I was to go into the "Channels"
(That Window located on bottom right in Photoshop 4.0) and select the black.
This has never worked.
Clicking on Channels shows "Black." Selecting all does not change
anything. Noticeable! Clicking on the black with the magic wand tool has
taken longer then I am willing to wait?
I have in the past selected all and cut then pasted into a new layer.
Used the magic wand tool to select the area to colored. Then switched
background layer to add gray.
So what part am I not getting? Does anyone have a step by step direction
for selecting the black so that it over laps the grays?
