This is just a shot in the dark but sounds like there are subtile shifts 
in the white areas of your image caused by your scanner. This is 
assuming the work was scanned as continuous tone instead of line art. If 
this is the case, a quick solution is to simply increase the tolerance 
of the paint bucket in the options pallete. A better solution is to scan 
as line art (straight b&w) at a minimum of 300dpi. It won't look as good 
on the screen but your printer will love it.
