We are the 99% and we shop at Trader Joe’s

Jerry Stratton, October 20, 2011

A couple of people have set up some very nice tents at the University of San Diego. USD is a small, private, Catholic university here in San Diego.

I wanted to title this “…and we shop at REI” but I can’t make out that logo with certainty. Their junk boxes, however, are Stehly Farms Organics and Trader Joe’s. I love Trader Joe’s and do almost all of my shopping there, but I’d hardly call these the grocery stores of the 99%.

That sign on the lower right of the first photo reads that money isn’t free speech, corporations aren’t made of people, and capitalism is not a moral economy. The sign calls this “simple math”, but doesn’t say how they would choose to ration speech, what rights should be denied people who are part of corporations, or what they would choose to replace capitalism with.

Probably some form of “Trader Joe’s should shut up and give me what I want.”

Update: the occupation didn’t last long. I had hoped to get some better photos and perhaps talk to them after work, but an hour later when I left for home, the tents were rolled up and they were gone.

In response to 2011 in photos: For photos and perhaps other quick notes sent on the fly.
