Music: Are you ready for that? Driving your car down a desert highway listening to the seventies and eighties rise like zombies from the rippling sand? I hope so.

Ann Coulter, Deadhead

Jerry Stratton, July 7, 2006

Just as the news media and discussion boards had almost convinced me I need to hate her even though I don’t read her, someone passed around this Ann Coulter interview at Jambands.com describing her experiences as a fan of the Grateful Dead.

While I love their music, I’ve only been to one Grateful Dead concert (and one Jerry Garcia concert). But I was awed by the on-line reaction when Jerry Garcia died, and made up a quick website collecting some of the reactions.

The one time I missed not being able to go to Dead shows more than any other since Jerry died was during the Clinton impeachment. There was so much viciousness—killed cats, punctured tires, threats, investigations and slander… I kept thinking: “Boy, would I like to go to a Dead show and dance with happy, friendly deadheads for just one night!”

She describes Deadheads as “excellent dancers! Watching a Deadhead dance is truly something to behold.” The one Grateful Dead concert I’ve been to has left two images in my mind. The dancing on the fringes is one of them. If I ever write a movie, there will be some Deadhead Dancing in it.
