"Apropos the origin of comic books, somebody recently told me that the story about M.C. Gaines sticking a price sticker on the giveaway books and sticking them on a newsstand (in this version at Grand Central Station) is not true. Does anybody have a citation for this one way or the other? I have seen the story in numerous accounts of the origins of comic books, but given that many of these simply repeat a story from an original source or two I am prepared to believe it is not true. But I would love a citation." Ian Gordon [i--r--n] at [is.su.edu.au] _____________________________________________________ 2. Crime Comics Scholars? "Crime Comics. Is anyone studying this genre? Are there research collections of crime comics that are accessible to this serious researcher? Any suggestions about artists/writers/editors/or/publishers of crime comics of the 40s-50s who may still be around and willing to be interviewed? Thanks for your attention to this query." Leonard Rifas [r--f--s] at [u.washington.edu] ----------------------------------------------------- 3. A Ph.D. program sought Glenn Morrison is seeking a doctoral program with these parameters: A. I want to study pop culture, but from within journalism/mass communication. B. I like qualitative AND quantitative methods, and don't prefer one over the other. C. I have to be supported (I'm po'). D. I want a school that's north of the Mason-Dixon line but east of the Mississippi. E. For assorted reasons, I've already ruled out Bowling Green and Penn State. Baas Pamphlets In American Studies I pulled the following off the H-PCAACA list. It seems like comics would be a good subject for a pamphlet: Philip Davies has recently taken over as editor of the British Association for American Studies Pamphlets series. There are currently 26 volumes in print, each about 50 pages long, packed with information & analysis. They make a useful addition to appropriate reading lists. Arts, humanities & social sciences all feature in the list. This BAAS series of publications will shortly be re-launched in a new format --the main change anticipated will be a shift to approximately 100 page length. Dr. Davies would appreciate your suggestions for suitable topics that you would like to see published and available for your own teaching, and/or proposals that you would like to write & for which you feel there is a market. Please contact him with suggestions. Meanwhile, if you are interested in publications from the current list, distribution is handled by Keele University Press, Keele, Staffs ST5 5BG, England. A fax to 0782 584120, for the attention of Richard Clark or Lucia Crothall will receive rapid attention. Price: 3.95 pounds each, except numbers 23 & 26, at 4.95, plus a mailing charge. Collection of Essays on Superheroes: Luca Somigli contributes this note on a collection of essays on superheroes. Daniele Brolli, ed. _Il crepuscolo degli eroi_. Bologna: Telemaco, 1992. The publisher "Telemaco" also puts out a journal entitled "Alphaville", which is specifically on popular literature (sci-fi, horror, cyberpunk, comics, etc.). Both are in Italian. The address of the publisher is: Telemaco Comunicazioni Editoriali s.r.l. Via de' Buttieri 7/a Bologna ITALY _____________________________________________________ 7. World Wide Web Server for Comics I pulled this note from Carl Steadman off Comics-L: "I am pleased to announce a World Wide Web server, _Bordeaux_and_Prague_, which contains sequential art of both an artistic and a theoretical nature. Currently, three illustrated fictions are available via this World Wide Web server: _The Letter_, a graphic narrative illustrating (that) "a letter always arrives at its destination" (or not); _Kid A In Alphabet Land Electronic_, an "abecedarian roller coaster ride through the phallocentric obscurantism of Jacques Lacan" (a thirty piece trading card set); and _The Valentine Thief_, an illustrated Valentine Day story. _Bordeaux_and_Prague_ requires a WWW client which supports embedded graphics. Currently, NCSA Mosaic is the only client available that does so. Mosaic comes in flavors for the Apple Macintosh, for Microsoft Windows, and for the X Window System, and is available at NCSA's anonymous ftp server at ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu. For the Macintosh, the latest version of Mosaic can be found via anonymous ftp at "ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu" in the "Mac/Mosaic" directory. For Windows, the latest version of Mosaic can be found via anonymous ftp at "ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu" in the "/PC/Mosaic" directory. For the X Window system, the latest version of Mosaic can be found via anonymous ftp at "ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu" in the "/Web/Mosaic-binaries" directory. _Bordeaux_and_Prague_ can be found at the URL http://mailbox.cdtl.umn.edu/ _____________________________________________________ 8. Smithsonian Fellowships and Grants Via Ftp Martin R. Kalfatovic, Information Access Coordinator at the Smithsonian, sent me this note about fellowships and grants available from the Smithsonian. The ftp site is: simsc.si.edu. The directory is SMITHSONIAN. And the document name is fellowships ******. He thinks that comics would fall under either the ART or the HISTORY categories.
