THIS IS FIT TO PRINT NUMBER 509: The first gold leaves of fall are blowing to the ground, a wild wind is on the rise. Mercury has gone retrograde, and the late apples are fully ripe. It's autumn; do you know where your pumpkins are? TREE TAX: A friend recently sent me a copy of an Australian gardening magazine and i noticed that the cover price was accompanied by the words, "including tree tax." Inside, in a box on the indicia page was a notice to the effect that since recycled printing paper was not available in the quality or quantity required to produce the magazine, the publisher had established a self administered tax, added it to the price of the periodical, and used the revenues to buy trees for reforestation projects in Asia, Australia, and Central America. A photo of some of men planting seedlings noted that these are not "plantation" timber trees, grown in clean tilled forests for eventual logging, but part of a forest renewal project operated by a grass-roots environmental group. This got me thinking. When i used to work for Eclipse Comics, we got letters all the time from folks who wondered why we didn't use recycled paper. A couple of comics have been printed on recycled stock-Dark Horse's Earth Day Concrete special comes to mind-but for the most part, comic book publishers shrug their shoulders and tell the same old story: "We can't get recycled paper in the quality or quantity we need for producing comics." Having checked out plenty of samples of recycled white web papers over the past few years, i know these comics publishers are not lying. The way things stand right now, you can either buy a nice, expen$ive, limited-quantity, white sheet suitable for producing about one title a month with a cover price in the $3.50 range, or you can buy something that's cheap, available in mass quantity, a bit more tight grained than a paper towel, and a poor substrate on which to print four colour art work. Soxhow about it for a voluntary tree tax? Do i hear any publisher say, "Yeah"? CANIFFITES JOURNAL: With issue #83, the venerable special interest zine Caniffites (devoted to the work of Milton Caniff) acquires a new publisher and becomes Caniffites Journal. Carl Horak is still the editor, the mix of art and text is still perfect, and the subject matter is still amazingly researched. This issue's highlight: partial reproduction of a circa 1941 hand written letter from First Lieutenant Philip Cochran, USAAF to Milton in which he explains how he trains young pilots. This is accompanied by the finished Terry and the Pirates dailies in which the newly created character Flip Corkin teaches Terry to fly, utilizing the methods and the slangy language found in the letter. A subscription is $12.00 for 4 quarterly issues per year, from SPEC Productions, Post Office Box 632, Manitou Springs, Colorado 80829. PUBLIC THANKS: Lots of folks send me goodies which are too obscure to pub-licize but too great to let go with a simple postcard of thanks. Herewith, some public gratitude for Tom Hegeman: Thanks for the fabulous 25 Years of Fandom Scrapbook. It was great to see all those old photos and con sketches from times gone by. I only wish you had pub-lished this zine for a wider audience than k-A and hangers-on like me. One comment: you noted that the wearing of "skimpy costumes" at con masquer-ades is not new and to back it up, you printed a photo of an unidentified woman in a very well-made Deja Thoris costume at the 1979 Seuling Con. Tom, i am not 100% sure, but i think that exact same costume-on another woman-won first prize at the 1964 World Con/Westercon XXIII in Oakland, California! It was provided by some ERB fans who had hired a professional model to wear it, which really angered the diehard fannish costumers. I remember this well, because i went as Sue Storm and was one of the few folks there in a comic book costume-all the rest were science fiction characters. And no, in case you are wondering, i didn't win a prize. === Ascii art again by: Chip Patton ([c r patton] at [chipster.b15.ingr.com]).
