Newsgroups: rec.arts.comics.info From: [c--ve--s] at [menudo.uh.edu] (Chris M. Cavers) Subject: 1993 comic related news stories from Houston Chronicle Date: Wed, 1 Sep 1993 17:34:41 GMT January 1, 1993 - August 31, 1993 I searched the 1993 Houston Chronicle electronic index for all articles that had the words "comic" and "book" in them. Here's the intersting ones that I found: January 31, 1993 Section A Page 2 Hell's Angles win suit against Marvel The Hell's Angles sued Marvel over the comic book character Hell's Angel and won. Marvel had to donate $35000.00 to the Ronald McDonald House charity for kids. Marvel changed the character's name to Dark Angel. February 14, 1993 Section Lifestyle Page 15 Article on X-men and the recent cartoon series, merchandising, etc. Interseting points: X-men books are the biggest selling comic books (no kidding). The 8 Marvel Mutant titles sell 32 million (It doesn't say if it is either 32 million dollars or 32 million comics - I think it is dollars). April 4, 1993 Section: Buisness Page 9 Article on Milestone Media. Some background on the people involved. Interesting points: Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline has sold more than 300,000 comics total for the first 6 issues. Hardware and Blood Syndicate had more than 300,000 orders (together I think) before even being shipped. In 1993, Milestone plans to ship 5 million comic books for its 4 titles. April 13, 1993 Section: Houston (not the first section in the newspaper) Page 1 **** (not on the front page of the newspaper) Article on Superman issue 500 and the return of Superman. Intersting points: Superman 500 had an initial press run of 4.2 million. Superman 75 had a press run of 3.5 million. Dc is passing Marvel this month (in sales I guess). January 3, 1993 Section: Business Page 4 Article on Terry Stuart - current president of Marvel Entertainment Group. Provides brief background on Terry Stuart. Intersting points: He became president of MArvel in September 1990. Marvel is a $1.1 million company. He owns 200,000 records, 50,000 comics, 15 jukeboxex and other collectables. Best line of the article: "Writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby revitalized Marvel in 1961 with the creation of offbeat heroes, such as the X-men, who had problems, neuroses and sometimes bad attitudes." January 29, 1993 Section: Houston Page 6 I think it's a higlights of the Tv shows for the day. 8pm on A&E Bob (show title - never heard of it) Bob and harlan are nominated for "Buster" awards but comic book guys keep winning the awards.
