From: [c--ve--s] at [Menudo.UH.EDU] (Chris M. Cavers) Newsgroups: rec.arts.comics.info Subject: horror and sci fi title checklist Date: 28 Dec 93 04:17:45 GMT File Name: Horror/Sci Fi Title Checklist Version: 4.20 Compiled by Chris M. Cavers I've been trying to track down horror/sci fi comic books. If you know of any titles that are mainly horror or sci fi related, please send them to me by email. If the books are only a part of a title's run (e.g. Adventure comics numbers aaa-bbb contain sci fi stories), please include that information. Also, some titles are published and then canceled more than one time, so an approximate year (or cover price) of publication would be nice. Generic superhero stuff (E.g. x-men, avengers, spiderman) does not really apply. There are exceptions, for example Strange Adventures #238 (20cent cover price) has 2 sci fi stories and 1 Adam Strange story (so it would count as a sci fi book). Lastly, since not too many horror/sci fi comics were published by Marvel/DC since 1980, it would help greatly if someone could email me titles done by independents. Feel free to email me about any titles that are not sci fi/horror and are in this list. CONTENTS SECTION 0: Questions, information needed, etc. SECTION 1: List of Titles To search for the titles that start with a certain letter (e.g. T), search for 'LET_T'. SECTION 2: Thanks to contributers SECTION 3: Clive Barker SECTION 4: Ec reprints: SECTION 5: Kill Image Plot Information SECTION 6: Pacific Comics/Eclipse Comics SECTION 7: John Carter, Warlord of Mars related books SECTION 8: Manga Science Fiction Titles SECTION 9: Anne Rice SECTION 10: Funny Animal Sci Fi and Horror Books SECTION 11: Titles that I have doubts about being sci fi or horror SECTION 0: Questions, information needed, etc. I need titles for the following: William Shatner's Tek Adaptation The adaptation of Brian Lumley's novel _Necroscope_. It was put into comic form this past year. Offhand, I don't remember who the publisher was, but it was a five issue run. They are going to be adapting his other books as well (from what I have read.) Regarding your question about the Necroscope adaptation. The first series ran five issues, and was published by Malibu. The first issue of the second adaptation, Wamphyri, was released last week. The Life of Death, New Murders in the Rue Morgue (Eclipse) (Books of Blood) Nightbreed (Epic) Cancelled after about 25 issues. Revelations (Eclipse) (Books of Blood) Son of Celluloid (Eclipse) (Books of Blood) Tapping the Vein (Eclipse 1989 Book 1-5) (Books of Blood) Weaveworld (Epic 1991 Book 1-3) Based on the novel "Weaveworld" The Yattering and Jack (Eclipse) (Books of Blood) also adapted as a "Tales From the Darkside" episode Books of Blood short stories adapted into comics: 1. Tapping the Vein (five issues so far, two stories per book -- see below) 2. Son of Celluloid 3. Revelations 4. Dread 5. The Life of Death Includes the short story "New Murders in the Rue Morgue." Following are which "Books of Blood" short stories are contained in each "Tapping the Vein" book: Story Title: Art by: Vol 1 "Human Remains" -- P. Craig Russell "Pig Blood Blues" -- Scott Hampton Vol 2 "Skins of the Fathers" -- Klaus Janson "In the Hills, the Cities" -- John Bolton Vol 3 "Midnight Meat Train" -- Denys Cowan & Michael Davis "Scape-Goats" -- Bo Hampton Vol 4 "Hell's Event" -- Steven E. Johnson, Alan Okamoto, Jim Pearson "The Madonna" -- Stan Woch, Mark Farmer, Fred Von Tobel Vol 5 "How Spoilers Bleed" -- Hector Gomez "Down, Satan" -- Tim Conrad Also, not part of the Tapping the Vein volumes, but single story adaptations of other Books of Blood stories of the same format: "The Yattering and Jack"-- John Bolton "Son of Celluloid" -- Les Edwards "Revelations" -- Lionel Talaro "Dread" -- Dan Brereton "The Life of Death" -- Stewart Stanyard "New Murders in the Rue Morgue" -- Hector Gomez Unless the artist also adapted the story, the stories are adapted by Chuck Wagner, Fred Burke, or Steve Niles. The stories are so faithful to the originals that the writers seem to have changed little or nothing. All books published by Eclipse. All are prestige format. Very high quality. (For completeness' sake, the Books of Blood, vols. 1 - 6, are the short story collections titled "Books of Blood, vol 1 - 3," "The Inhuman Condition," "In The Flesh," and "Cabal.") SECTION 4: Ec reprints: There have been several different series that reprint the EC books of the 1950's. As far as I know of, they use the same titles as do the EC books from the 1950's. The 32 page ones reprint one issue of an EC book and the 64 page issues reprint 2 different EC books. The information as to which books are reprinted is usually on the inside of the front cover. There are also oversize EC reprint books (about the same size as a Marvel Treasury Edition). I think those books reprint 2 issues of EC books. There also are hardbound collections of the EC books for all of the different EC titles (advertisements for those collections are in the 64 page EC reprints). The reprints are complete and reprint all of the origional 1950's books. EC Titles related to horror/sci fi: Crypt of Terror (EC 1950 17-19) formerly Crime Patrol, becomes Tales from the Crypt Haunt of Fear (EC 1950 15-28) formerly Gunfighter Incredible Science Fiction (EC 1955 30-33) formerly Weird Science-Fantasy Tales From the Crypt (EC 1950 20-46) formerly Crypt of Terror Vault of Horror (EC 1950 12-40) formerly War Against Crime Weird Fantasy (EC 1950 13-22) formerly A Moon, A Girl, Romance - becomes Weird Science-Fantasy Weird Science (EC 1950 12-22) formerly Saddle Romances - becomes Weird Weird Science-Fantasy (EC 1953 23-29) formerly Weird Science and Weird Fantasy SECTION 5: Kill Image Very funny book where a small press publisher snaps, and goes and offs Lee, McFahrlane and Leifeld. SECTION 6: Pacific Comics/Eclipse Comics Pacific Comics put out a number of sci-fi and horror anthologies, some of which were later picked up and wound up by Eclipse. It's all early eighties, as far as I'm aware. There were also a set of horror titles between the two, where Eclipse finished the run of the Pacific Comics started title, then kicked off a similar book with a similar title. SECTION 7: John Carter, Warlord of Mars related books John Cameron adds the following info: Characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, David Innes, etc. Anyway, ERB is considered one of the founders of American science fiction as a result of his books on Mars, Venus, the Moon, at the center of the earth, etc. The original John Carter books started in 1912. That's why I would certainly vote to include in your list: John Carter, Warlord of Mars (Marvel) 1-28 1977-79 Weird Worlds (National) 1-7 1972-74 Color Comics (Dell) #375 (John Carter again) 50s... JC is treated something like a superhero in the comics, and I know you're not including them - but the original JC books by Burroughs are certainly very important in the history of sf, and can still be found in paperback today (in the sf section - Del Rey Books). -John SECTION 8: Manga Science Fiction Titles Akira (Epic) (by Katsuhiro Otomo) manga sci fi Appleseed (Eclipse) (by Masamune Shirow) manga sci fi Battle Angel Alita (Viz) (by Yukito Kishiro) manga sci fi (maybe superhero?) Most adaptations are faithfully done by Faye Perozich or Cynthy J. Wood, unless otherwise noted. Artists vary. SECTION 10: Funny Animal Sci Fi and Horror Books Information supplied by Tad Morgan Interesting list -- I figured I'd use it as an excuse to look through my comics to provide you with a list of anthropomorphic (a.k.a. "funny" animal, a.k.a. furry) comics that fit into the sf catagory. It is by no means exhaustive as I'm missing quite a few issues of a few series, etc. Anyway, its a start... Adventures of Captain Jack (Fantagraphics 1-12) sci fi, anthro Albedo Anthropomorphics (Thoughts & Images 1983-1989 v0n0 - v1n14) sci fi anthro "Erma Felna, EDF" main story with sf backups including: a Blade Runner parody, "High Orbit", "konny and czu", "Space Wolf" Albedo Anthropomorphics (Antarctic Press 1991-present) sci fi anthro "Erma Felna, EDF" & "Space Wolf" Command Review (Thoughts & Images 1-3) sci fi, anthro-collections of "Erma Felna EDF" Critters (Fantagraphics 1986-1989 1-6,8-17,29,34,42,43,47-49 [a.k.a. Birthright] ,50) - general anthro anthology, listed issues have at least one sf or horror story in them Dalgoda (Fantagraphics) sci fi Furrlough (Antarctic Press 7,8,10) - general antro anthology, listed issues contain at least one sf story Fusion (Eclipse) sci fi Space Usagi (Mirage 1-3) - sci fi, anthro Space Wolf (Antarctic Press 1-2) - sci fi, anthro SECTION 11: Titles that I have doubts about being sci fi or horror Lum*Urusei Yatsura (translated manga by Rumiko Takahashi, published by Viz, lots of aliens, spaceships, and trips to other planets, times, etc., but it's more of a humor title) Metal Bikini (published by Eternity, more of a superhero title) Trouble With Tigers (published by Antarctic Press, crossover of Tigers of Terra, which is science fiction, with Ninja High School, which isn't. Mostly takes place in the Tigers of Terra universe) Astro-Boy (published by Now), Battle of the Planets (publisher unknown), Voltron (publisher unknown): All fall somewhere between science fiction and superhero.
