Inform me of mistakes or missed appearances. Abhijit ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Swamp Thing: #37-40,44-51, 55, 65-67,70-77,84,88-90,99,114-115, 135-137 [ #37 is when John actually comes out to the world. However, if you look at earlier issues, especially the issue with the Swordfish, you might see him in the background. Bissette and Totleben drew this character in the background and eventually Alan got the hint and started using him. ] Authors : Alan Moore, Rick Veitch, Jamie Delano (1 story), Doug Wheeler, Nancy Collins. Ollie asks him if he should give the folks in hell John's name. John replies "If you do, they'll give you a warm welcome". Apparently Mike Grell wanted to write a storyline about Ollie and John, but that never happened. Written by Mike Grell. Secret Origins Special #1 (Batman Villains) : One panel, in the framing sequence of the story (written by Neil Gaiman). Is asked by a TV crew what he thinks about the Joker and Batman. Replies "Sorry Squire, I'm not from around here. Make that no comment". Secret Origins #27 (Zatara and Zatanna): Two panels. One panel which indicates when his romance with Zatanna happened. Another panel which recaps the American Gothic climax and Zatara's death. Author : Roy Thomas. Zatanna mini series #1, and #2 : Appears as a dream image and in several flashbacks. Written by Lee Mars. Spectre #15 : Dr. Fate and the Phantom Stranger are forming a coalition of mystics to fight the Spectre. They look up John, who is unconscious. Written by Ostrander. Aids Special Insert in some DC comics. Appears with Death. Written by Gaiman. DC Who's Who : John appeared in Who's Who Update #3 in 1987 He also appeared in the special mature issue of DCs Who's Who in 1991, #15. John was also referred to by name in the Doug Moench Spectre series (circa 13 or so), but does not make any on panel appearances. Arcana, Books of Magic Annual #1 also refers to John by name, as does Children's Crusade #2. as do later issues of Books of Magic. Batman : MiteFall has an otherwordly Mite version of Constantine. Appearances I'm unsure about --------------------------- I know John was referred to in several issues of Teen Titans by Dayton and others (this is when John recruited Dayton for American Gothic). What I'm unsure about is whether he actually made a real on-panel appearance. Crisis #5 has one of those gorgeous Perez two page spreads with literally hundreds of DC heroes and characters in the Monitor's satellite. According to Swamp Thing #46, John was also there (was was Ambush Bug). Swamp Thing was explicitly shown in the satellite in Crisis #5. However, I can't see John in the crowd, but there are so many people there, its possible I missed him. Constantine look-alikes and ancestors ------------------------------------ Lady Johanna Constantine, an ancestor of John Constantine appeared in a few issues of Sandman. John Ostrander wanted to use John in his Firestorm = Elemental storyline, but was not allowed to do so. He created Rasputin, a somewhat John-like character who did for Firestorm what John did for Swampy. Rasputin has only appeared in Firestorm and in Captain Atom #54. Grant Morrison wanted to use John in Doom Patrol, but was denied permission, and so created Kipling, a parody (of sorts) of John. Kipling has only appeared in Doom Patrol. Phil Foglio was denied permission to use either Kipling or JC in Stanley and his Monster. He created a (very funny) John-look alike called Ambrose Bierce, who appeared in SHM 2-4.
