Newsgroups: rec.arts.comics.misc Subject: Damon's Watchmen Annotations From: [d b c 3] at [po.CWRU.Edu] (Damon B. Crumpler) Date: 30 Aug 1993 23:03:31 GMT okay, i recently read the watchmen with the annotations in hand, and i noticed a couple of things that are not in my copy of said watchmen annotations, by doug atkinson. i believe my copy is april 1993 or so, so if any of these additions are redundant or superfluous, please bear with me. the following notes are meant to be read as a supplemement to the aforementioned annotations (i'm sure someone out there will gladly list the ftp site that they currently reside in) and as such, follow all the format rules etc. that apply to the originals. all of the characters etc. are copywrited DC comics. also, anyone reading this should note that SPOILERS do apply, so if you haven't read the actual book, what the HELL are you WAITING for? one final note- i lack the technology to store a soft copy of these, and as such if anyone finds these remotely interesting they should save them somewhere, as i have neither the time nor the inclination to repost. thank you. that is all: ISSUE #1 Page 2, panel 8 Note the scar placement on the Comedian roughly approximates the blood/smiley motif. Page 6, Panel 1 Note that Rorschach's figure approximates the blood splatter motif which is emphasized in issue #11. Page 10-13 Note that Rorschach does not look directly at Dan during the entire exchange (that should read look face to face) Page 13 Panel 2 Note the Owl costumes presence in comparison to Dan's Page 18 Note that Ozymandias does not look face to face with Rorschach during this exchange (the opposite of R.'s encounter with Dan.) ISSUE#2 Page 5- calling attention to the obvious(?), note the panel placements during the rape scene, with the gorilla head prominently featured. Page 17 Panel 6 Note stain is similar to blood splatter on smiley face (also pattern for issue #11) ISSUE #3 Page 1, Panel 3 NOTE: the titlte New Frontiersman resembles the title of a magazine called New Frontiers in _The Fountainhead_, by Ayn Rand, which is a book that deals with (though Ms. Rand would loath to admit it) the concept of Nietzche's "overman", or more commonly referred to as "superman". However, the liberal leanings of the magazine in question lead me to question as to whether or not this is the root source for this title. Given the nature of Rand's book, there IS a possi- bility. Page 12, Panel 3 the grafitti on the wall says (ONE NIGHT GO MAD) I am not sure about this, but it seems to correlate well with issue #10 Page 5, Panel 4 (which is also obscured) Also, here again is the grafitti "krystallnacht" Page 15, Panel 2 obscure grafitti that, to my best decifering abilities, seems to say something to the effect of K.T are King, perhaps referring to the street drug. ISSUE #4 Page 5, Panel 1 the annotations mention that Bestiary is some aspect or term in relation to quantum physics- I'll take their word on that. However, i just think it's neat that a bar for intellects is called the Bestiary. ISSUE #5 the theme is the Rumrunner sign, and yes, i know it's real obvious, but note the similarity of the theme with Rorschach's mask. Page 7, Panel 1 also note the triangle/circle motif (which is mostly the triangle motif of pyramid deliveries, but also includes the symbol of the militant lesbian group) Panel 6 Take a lteral interpretation of the Grateful Dead poster. also note its similarity to the RRsign motif. Pag3 8 Panel 1 Note splash mark on truck similar to previous page's poster. Page 11 Panel 5 The first appearance of the Hiroshima Lovers visual motif. Panels 7-9 The blot Rorschach is making is similar to the RR motif. Page 12 Panel 9 Moore is specifically calling attention to Rorschach with Bernard's words. Page 17 Panel 4 The Gazette headline reads, "industrialist in Murder Bid" (the annotations leave out the word Bid) Page 21 panel 7 Note the smiley motif on the shark. Panel 8 the triangle image the Annotations point out is a triangle circle motif, and for some reason i put in my notes ("like sun and pyramid"), as if that was supposed to mean something. Page 28, Panel 3 Rorschach's mask is forming question marks. ISSUE #6 Page 3 Panel 6 Note placement of Kovacs in the shot. Page 8 Panel 5 Hiroshima Lover's shadow. Page 10, Panel 3 UNhappy face Page 16, Panel 9 Note the time on the clock. Page 32 Note also the Hiroshima Lovers drawing. ISSUE #7 I take issue with the motif cited in the annotations. Instead of "reflections in an oval", i think it should be "eyes of an owl", in other words what each of the three individual owls (Arnie, Dan (esp. his glasses), and The Nite Owl) Page 16- Hiroshima Lovers. Page 22 Panel 7 Hiroshima Lovers Page 28 Panel 9 Smiley motif Pages 29-32- NOTE: in the article, Dan mentions that he is visiting someone. This is Mothman. ISSUE#8 Page1-2 Note the complete paralles in the shots between Hollis and Sally. Page 1 Panel 3 the Annotations list the date as the 26th. This is wrong- Sally's calendar lists it as the 27th (panel 8) Page 12, Panel 6 Roth mentions a company that owns Nova Express- this is obviously Pyramid Deliveries. Page 27 panel ? Note the time on the clock. Page 28 last panel Note the blood on Hollis in the picture. Pages 29-32 It should say Volume 6 (or it does, i can't remember) Note also the smiley face on Rorschach's mask in the picture. ISSUE #9 Page 7 Panels 7-9 there is a smiley face with no blood on it. Page 14 John MAY be talking about Chaos Theory- Moore's into it, and a point mentioned on a later page is probably the germ of the idea for Big Numbers. Page 18 Panel 1 NOTE: John says he is "killing somebody- their identity is uncertain" This is important. Page 20 It seems this party is in the Comedian's honor- most likely for killing Woodward and Bernstein- (i could be wrong, i haven't date-checked that) ISSUE#10 Cover: Note the smiley motif in the radar Page 5 Panel 4 Also Grafitti- "One Night Go Mad" That downward spiral symbol the annots mentions this time is pointing staight into the trash can. (i forget the conversation on that panel, though) ALSO: another recurring visual i picked up at this point is the cross with 4 diagonal streaks- it appears several times earlier Page 6, Panel 7 The annots asks, does he (Rorschach) have a human side after all?"-- it's the presence of the kids- Rorschach does not like to see children suffer. Page 18, Panel 2 Note the time on the clock.
