X-News: fnalv rec.arts.comics.misc:53437 From: [p--ri--s] at [icebox.iceonline.com] (Patrick Sauriol) Subject:ATTENTION: Artists, Writers, Inkers, etc.... Date: Fri, 7 Jan 1994 18:49:42 GMT Couple of days ago I posted this message, and the system I'm on bombed on me. Sigh. So here's the return of the talent search message... Debuting in April 1994 is a new black-and-white anthology comic book called FREEFLIGHT. 32 pages in length, it features one-issue short stories as well as multiple issue story arcs. Stories range from all genres: science fiction, horror, fantasy, drama, comedy, surrealist and on. It's being distributed across Canada, America and the UK, so there's no excuse to buy it (plug plug). We're currently open to receiving submissions from writers and artists, inkers and letterers. Freeflight's stories are a combination of new talent, established creators and professionals in the comics industry. We're looking for GOOD stories, not just art, not just a plot. We believe that comics can offer both to the reader. If you're interested, here's some info: ARTISTS: Being a black-and-white comic, we can't accept color work. Art should be done with straight ink work, crosshatching, Letratone, Ziptone, Duo-shade paper or the like. Basically, if it photocopies exactly, it's reproducible. Pencillers who can ink and letter their own work can be an asset, but is not a requirement. Inkers, letterers and pencillers are all welcome. Please include ALL areas of your work with a submission. WRITERS: Propsals should consist of a synopsis of the story, a break-down in installments and the first installment in its entirety with page and panel breakdowns. Estimated page count is also necessary. We're reviewing based upon originality, ideas clearly expressed, cool concepts, and the evening wear competition (well...you get the idea). We accept all areas of script submissions. What it comes down to is the story - every good story begins with a good idea. Artists and writers good in one genre should mention this, and, if possible, include examples. QUALITY: You have to want to work on comics. We understand delays, but you have to be serious about writing a script, or completing all your artwork on time for the inker/letterer. We're looking for clarity, page design, exploration of ideas and a good tale to tell. We're shooting for the best quality comic book we can make. Artist/writer teams are welcome, submitting their proposal as a complete package. Artowkr should be in the form of comps, with one page design completed. It's not necessary for an artist to have a writer, or vice versa, as part of our job is to match up people based upon their strengths. SENDING IN MATERIAL: Send photocopies of art! Send written work on copies as well! Do not send us your SOLE copy of your work! Do not trust the post office that much! They're nice people, but mistakes happen. Send a SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE (SASE) for return of material and responce. Please make sure your mailing address is printed clearly on the package, and the postage is included - this is extremely important. We are located in Vancouver, Canada, so you may need international reply coupons depending on where you live. All creators who read this message are welcome to submit, be it Canada, United States, United Kingdom or Peru. WHAT YOU GET: All artwork/story ideas are OWNED by the CREATORS. We just publish the work. It makes sense for you to own your stuff, right? Payment is based upon the book's profits past breaking even. If the book gets to the area, creators receive 50% of the resulting profit. We have no idea how much this'll be, if at all. We hope people buy it (grovelling and pleading inserted here). Finally, if you're down here you must still be interested. The address follows: FREEFLIGHT - SUBMISSIONS DEP'T Box 47536 #1 - 1020 Austin Avenue Coquitlam, British Columbia CANADA V3K 2A0 For the interested parties, Coquitlam is a suburb of Vancouver. If you have any other short questions, you can contact me at the 'net address of '[p--ri--s] at [icebox.iceonline.com]'. I'll post more about the upcoming series when it gets a wee bit closer to the date. We've got ads in a few trade journals, so watch for 'em, 'specially the "eyeball ad". I'm particularly fond of that one, myself. Thanks, and hope to hear from you soon. Patrick Sauriol Project Coordinator, Writing
