Cauzzi" <[c--uz--i] at [ipruniv.cce.unipr.it]> Ok, here is my Angouleme: I think there was nothing exceptional this year (i mean everything was great but nothing new respect to the last two years). I saw that the big french publishers got stands in the "espace international", maybe they are looking for more new artists. In my opinion the most successful artist, judging from the queing at the "dedicace" (i like this term for signing) is Edika, after him Liberatore and then Moebius. The real winner for me is Baudoin, he is great in art, great in writing (got the Alph-art for the scenario) and best in public relations. Ask for a sketch he will not say no, if you buy three albums you get three great drawings, if you meet him at night in the pub, well you get a great lesson on his way of interpreting the comic art. Trondheim (one of my favourites) is just an arsehole. We read about his personality problems in "Approximativement" but he didn't solve them at all. >From what i saw and asked the future of alternative french comics is in the hand of l"Association" "Amok" "EgocommeX" and "Stakhano", that is, groups of authors that do everything from creation to distribution. As Centro fumetto A. Pazienza we took nice interviews from Eisner, Talbot, Bernet, Hermann, Kristiansen, Neaud (the winner of AlphArt coup de coeur), Sacco (he speaks a little italian!!!). The best exhibitions was Prado, you see again how difficult (impossible) is to publish color comics at their best, even if you use the most expensive techniques and paper. Shades of grey-pink-cyan are nothing in the published edition if compared with the originals, pity, but is the same for others like Mattotti or Toppi or De Crecy. What impressed me is not the comics "per se" but the way people goes to this convention. I asked: 300 children per day visit the festivals exhibitions in organized tours for schools. At the exhibition of the award for schools (from 6 years old till 18) flocks of children invaded the corridors between the panels and lined for a drawing of the young winner (forgot the name). At the "Grain de Pro" (seed of professional) you have the best artists of tomorrow, all there. Just wait some years and you'll see their names again published besides Baru Moebius Juillard... There is certainly a political "grand oeuvre"; who pulls the wires are Fred and Giraud, they organise and decide the comic art in France, they create the young artists in the primary schools and bring them to maturity. Great. My best finding was A Suivre number 1 for 20 FF. French do not collect magazines, this is why is difficult to find old issues but when you do they come away very cheap. I saw photocopies of the new Mattotti (he he he) wait and see. It was wonderful to meet all the people from the net, Mark, Manfred, Jessica, Lisa, Bart, Tony... Next year is the 25th anniversary, big things are coming, the rendez vous no one can miss, be prepared.
