From: [b g lover] at [netcom.com] (William Glover) Newsgroups: rec.guns Subject: [NEWS] Black Rhino Hoax Date: 30 Dec 1994 20:34:06 -0500 On NightLine tonight they had a story on the new 'Cop Killer' Rhino and Black Rhino bullets. As the NRA has said, the claims are mostly a hoax. HP White labs ran the tests for ABC. Tests revealed a bullet composed of Winchester components, 5 large birdshot over a plastic material inside a gilding metal case covered with plastic. They tested a 45ACP round. They had 4 sample bullets. In gelatin the bullet made a wound channel of about 3-4 inches deep and about 2-2.5 inches diameter. About what you would expect from a good high velocity hollow point. They showed a 45 ACP hollow point as a comparison. Baseball size wound...hahaha. Type IIIa bullet proof vests stopped them easily. No more, no less damage than a 45ACP ball round. Same goes for the dent in the backstop. Within 2 mm of that of standard 45 ball. The lab noted the bullet fired at the vest had a 30% higher velocity than the other 3 rounds. That's some SD. Probably wouldn't work in a real gun. They used test barrels in a stand. Reporter that broke the story said he did some research before reporting on it in Time Magazine on Dec 18. "He asked a gun dealer he knows really well. But no, he did no more investigation than that. Can you say pack journalism? The key questions is why the "hair trigger" response from Schumer to ban a non exisitant product. Also what is really behind this whole episode? The Why remains open for discussion. Time will tell. =================================================== "It is a crime Bill --- Legislation by use of lies" [b g lover] at [netcom.com] ===================================================
