Rohland is a journalist who writes for two Pennsylvania papers -- the _Reading_Times and _Reading_Eagle_. She says she debated for years whether she should own a gun, but now believes she's better off with her new .38 Special than without it. She writes that a number of people have disagreed with her decision. Some tell her that they can fend off an attacker by whacking him with a tennis racket, throwing a shoe at him or hiding in the closet. But Rohland retorts, "I think this is dangerously unrealistic." "Mentally, I am prepared to put a big hole in anyone who invades my home and tries to hurt my family," she said. "I just pray I never have to." TENNESSEE: JURY FREES MAN WHO FIRED ON POLICE IN RAID A jury took just 22 minutes to acquit Sterling Forgey on charges of attempted murder in April. Forgey had fired at four police officers when they burst into his home looking for drugs. Forgey, who has a hearing problem, was not aware that police were outside his door last November. They kicked down the door and fired a shot, hitting his wife in the temple. Forgey then grabbed his gun and fired back -- later explaining that he was acting in self- defense, believing that a burglar was breaking into his home. Character witnesses during the trial described Mr. Forgey as honest and non-violent; and as being a model worker at his job, respected by fellow workers and supervisors. The prosecution presented no evidence that Forgey, who was recovering from heart surgery at the time of the raid, had ever been involved in drugs or anything else illegal. No drugs were found at his residence during the raid. Apparently, the search warrant used by the police to enter Forgey's home was flawed. Judge Steven Beeb said the verdict "should be a message to the police department" to verify their information. TEXAS: POLICE CHIEF LIES UNDER OATH A Texas police chief lied to a government panel in February while trying to sway members against a proposed concealed carry law. Richardson Chief Kenneth Yarbrough tried to scare panel members by telling them that if a carry law is passed, citizens will be able to _easily_conceal_ a 100-round Calico M-950, which comes "with instructions on how to convert this weapon to a full automatic." However, the facts are otherwise. The Calico M-950 is 21 inches long and weighs over five pounds when fully loaded, making it a very difficult choice for concealed carry. The Calico also does not come with full-auto conversion instructions. _The_Gun_Owners_ is the official newsletter of _Gun_Owners_of_America,_Inc._, an organization dedicated to the preservation of our Second Amendment rights.
