I had a long conversation with a fellow employee just the other day. He is from Haiti, and had just returned from there after arranging the immigration of his parents. His most profound observation as to the hold the current dictatorships have held over the people related directly to our RKBA issue. He said that the dictators put in considerable effort to confiscate any and all private firearms. Being a small country, they got them - or enough of them anyway. Only after the arms were collected did Cedras & Co implement their bloody purges of opposition members and their general terror campaigns against the average citizens. Without the threat of arms, the people were absolutely helpless in the face of even the slightest whim of Cedras or any member of his 'security' troops. Robbery, rape, torture, extortion and murder are now carried out at will by the government forces - who are secure in the knowledge that any noteworthy resistance is impossible. Governments are like individual men. To be safe from them, they must RESPECT your ability to resist them. When a people are helpless against a State, the State wastes no time living down to its worst potential. To anyone who imagines that it can't happen here - note that the Haitians thought it couldn't happen there either. The path to dictatorship is short and progress quick. It *can* happen here ... perhaps it already is. Suggested reading ... "Lost Rights" by James Bovard (1994) --Jim
