From: Jeff Chan <[c--n] at [shell.portal.com]> Newsgroups: rec.guns Subject: WWW URL: live version of firearms.faq! Date: 17 Jun 1994 15:38:40 -0400 I've completed about 90% of the first pass on a "live" version of my firearms.faq where all the actual Internet resources are instantly available under your WWW browser. Please try it & give me your feedback. This means when you click on the name of a firearms newsgroup you read the newsgroup. When you click on a mailing list name you get info on the list. When you click on the subscription address, you get to type an email message to subscribe or get info. Clicking on a gopher site gets you the gopher site. Likewise for telnet & ftp sites. This is exactly what WWW was meant for... I've also included other WWW firearms info sites which of course are just a click away. The WWW URL is: ftp://ftp.shell.portal.com/pub/chan/firearms.faq.html http://www.portal.com/~chan/firearms.faq.html If you encounter any network problems connecting to this site, please send trace data to Portal's support ([REDACTED] at [cup.portal.com]). (But also try again in a week. I don't know whether Portal has fully recovered from last Friday's major power spike...) If you don't have WWW, a plaintext version of my firearms.faq file will always be available. (I haven't synchronized it with the html version but will as soon as I make a sed script to remove all the html stuff from the html version.) Here's my ftp help file. __ To get files from my ftp directory: ftp ftp.shell.portal.com (or ftp 156.151.3.4) [give "anonymous" as your login, then give your login e.g. "[j--e] at [host.com]" (not your password) as password.] Name: anonymous Password: [j--e] at [host.com] [help or rhelp for help in ftp] cd /pub/chan ls or dir -- to see the files get or mget -- to get files (e.g. get firearms.faq) bye -- to disconnect & exit ftp Note: before transferring binary files like .zip files, programs, and any files with non-printing characters like Windows documents, be sure to give the command "bin" to ftp. This puts ftp in binary mode so that the files are correctly transferred. Before transferring plain text files, give the command "asc" to put ftp in ascii mode. If you're on an IP connection and you don't have corporate firewalls, you should be able to ftp out. If blocked, you may want to ask your Internet administrator if there is a site in your domain that you can ftp out from. Note that ftp.shell.portal.com is no longer behind a firewall, so firewall-associated problems with ftp access should have gone away. Please send any problems directly to Customer Support: [REDACTED] at [shell.portal.com] Please include debug or trace info if possible. If you only have email and don't have ftp access, let me know. I've tried some mail-to-ftp servers and they seem to work (if slowly). -- Jeff Chan Internet: [c--n] at [shell.portal.com] uucp mail: {apple,claris,pyramid}!shell.portal.com!chan (Disclaimer: Opinions expressed are mine unless otherwise noted.) +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The Bill of Rights is a contract. | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ WWW URL: ftp://ftp.shell.portal.com/pub/chan/index.html ftp: ftp.shell.portal.com: pub/chan: README, INDEX, firearms.faq firearms, liberty mailing lists: [m--r--o] at [shell.portal.com]: help
