From "Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty" by James Bovard, page 221: In 1983, Rep. John Dingell, liberal chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, called the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms "a jack-booted group of fascists who are perhaps as large a danger to American society as I could pick today." (ref 209) The Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution investigated the BATF and concluded, "Enforcement tactics made possible by current firearms laws are constitutionally, legally, and practically reprehensible. ... Approximatedly 75% of BATF gun prosecutions were aimed at ordinary citizens who had neither criminal intent nor knowledge, but were enticed by agents into unknowing technical violations." (ref 210) Do we need to wait another 12 years before we fix this problem?
