E. Michael Kahoe, who directed the Violent Crimes and Major Offenders Section at FBI headquarters, was named in a one-count "felony information" accusing him of ordering the destruction of an internal FBI report critical of the "shoot on sight" orders issued by the Bureau during the standoff with Randy Weaver. The "shoot on sight" orders led to the death of Vicki Weaver at the hands of a government sniper, and Kahoe apparently wanted the documents destroyed to prevent Mr. Weaver's attorneys from obtaining them. According to The Washington Times (10/23/96), the decision by prosecutors to file a "felony information" rather than an indictment in the case may well mean that Mr. Kahoe has reached an agreement to plead guilty and become a cooperating witness. Government attorneys involved in the investigation refused to comment about where the investigation is leading, but the New York Times (10/23/96) reported that Larry Potts, the former No. 2 official at the FBI, remains a central figure in the criminal investigation. Three other high-ranking FBI officials also remain under suspicion. Mr. Kahoe faces 10-year prison sentence and $250,000 fine if convicted on the obstruction of justice charge. Stay tuned! REAGAN URGES CLINTON TO CUT BRADY ADS: Saying they stretch "even the minimum levels of civility in current political advertising," Nancy Reagan this week urged President Clinton to remove footage of the 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan from Clinton-Gore campaign television commercials currently airing across the nation. While the White House initially defended the commercial as an "appropriate way to highlight gun control," and vowed to keep it running, late this week the campaign quietly re- cut the ad to remove the assassination footage. The ads went off the air on Thursday, October 24. LATEST UPDATES TO NRA-PVF PREFERENCE CHARTS: The 1996 NRA-PVF Political Preference Charts (PPCs) have arrived! A LOOK AT THE STATES: Delaware: Delaware Action for Animals, a state-based animal extremist group, is circulating petitions throughout the state to stop the Youth Waterfowl Hunting Day scheduled for November 2. The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) issued a special rule this year that allows the states to set-aside a special youth hunting day before or after their regular waterfowl seasons. The NRA fully supported the action by FWS and has encouraged all states to participate by holding a special youth waterfowl hunting day. To combat the animal extremists, sportsmen and women throughout Delaware should contact the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection -- Division of Fish and Wildlife at (302) 739-5295 to register their support of the youth waterfowl hunting day. Tennessee: The Tennessee Firearms Association (TFA) is on the information super-highway! Check out TFA's homepage at "www.nashville.com/~tfa" and find information on candidates for the November elections, as well as text of most Tennessee firearms statues, including the 1996 right to carry law. =+=+=+=+ This information is provided as a service of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action, Fairfax, VA.
