MINNESOTA: Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE's McGrath reports that when state taxpayers file their '95 returns, "They'll find an unlikely option on their tax form: the chance to steer state subsidies to a group that advocates legalizing marijuana." The MN Grassroots Party has "elbowed" its way onto the state tax form, "which could bring it tens of thousands of dollars." Grassroots members simply "read the fine print of the law" and followed the "fairly easy" qualification requirements. Now Grassroots officials hope taxpayers will "just say yes" and check off the box to send $5 in state aid to the party; doing so doesn't cost the taxpayer a cent. More than 80,000 voters backed Grassroots candidates statewide on 11/8. Grassroots '94 gov. cand. Will Shetterly said the party "believes in leaving people alone who want to be left alone and helping people who want help." MN GOP chair Chris Georgacas: "Light 'em up!" Turning "more serious," Georgacas added, "This shows the absurdity of the Minnesota campaign-finance laws" (12/3).
