When I got home this evening, there was an apology from the Senator's office on my answering machine. Harkin's office also called the instructor and told him they wouldn't have made the call in the first place, if they had known it was me giving the lecture. They said they were confident that I knew Senator Harkin's position on the issue, due to the volume of correspondence we've had over the past few years. I asked them to provide me with a copy of the medical marijuana bill that Harkin co-sponsored in 1982, along with his reasons for co-sponsoring it. That should make interesting reading. Sincerely, Carl Olsen Friday, November 22, 1996, 10:34 a.m. Hi Carl, this is Laura Hessburg from Senator Harkin's office returning your call. Look, uh, the point of the call to the professor was not to open the debate. I think you've received numerous correspondences from our office on Senator Harkin's views on medical use of marijuana, so that was not the point of the call. It was just simply responding to a constituent who expressed concerns that Senator Harkin's views were represented inaccurately. At the time of the call, I had no idea that you were the speaker and if it's not true then I apologize. I was just responding to a constituent's concerns. If you have further questions for me, you can reach me at Senator Harkin's office at 202-224-3254. Thanks. *********************************************************************** * Carl E.
