Date: Thu, 04 Jan 1996 22:44:08 -0700 At about 1pm today, January 4th, the retail storefront of Hemp BC was raided by Vancouver police and cleared out of bongs, pipes, mushroom kits, seeds, and anything else that the cops could get their hands on. The Hemp BC wholesale office, which is also the Cannabis Canada magazine and website office, was occupied and searched by Vancouver police officers until about 8pm. Despite our fears our computers were not seized, and we even found a few roaches and seed envelopes that they left behind. Marc Emery, owner of Hemp BC and publisher of Cannabis Canada, was arrested and led from his office in handcuffs. The store manager and two employees were also arrested, handcuffed, and taken to jail in the paddy wagon. Emptying out the Hemp BC wholesale & mail order department required four police cars and a huge Budget Rent-a-truck parked out front. While they were searching our offices we quickly gathered together a crowd of about forty people who chanted and drummed and politely told the police that they were fascist pawns while they unloaded box after box of our products into the Budget rent-a-truck. This kind of police harassment is just the beginning of the treatment Cannabis Canadians can expect if Bill C-7 becomes law. We must not tolerate this kind of oppression. The Hemp BC retail storefront will be open again tomorrow, and every day after that. We will be selling pipes, bongs and seeds as per usual, although we might be understocked for a day or two. We encourage you to call the Vancouver police to voice your opinion about the raid at: (604) 665-3081. You should also call Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre (where Hemp BC is located) at: (604) 666-0135. She can be faxed at: (604) 666-0114. Also please call local and national media, (newsprint, TV, and radio) and ask them if they're going to cover this important story. Please instruct them to call 1-800-330-HEMP and contact Marc Emery for more information. BC media that you should call: (Ask for the news desk. Be friendly, polite, and to the point.)
