Date: Fri, 26 Nov 1993 18:37:13 GMT theres an excellant article in scientific americans special issue: MEDICINE (sorry, there no date on this mag, but i belive it came out around aug, of 93...) p30, Opium, Cocaine, anf Marijuana in American History the article contains a nice pull page repo. of an ad for GLYCO=HEROIN(Smith), a OTC cough syrup. heres a short exerpt from the ad itself... The sum of clinical experience designates Glyco-Heroin (Smith) as a respiratory sedative superior in all respects to the preparations of opium, morphine, codeine and other narcotics and withaldevoid of the toxic or deprssing effects which characterize the latter when given in does suffcient to reduce the reflex irritability of the bronchial, tracheal and laryngeal mucous membranes.... the article states in part that heroin was first synthesized in 1874, and that the name 'Heroin' was introduced by the Bayer Company when they introduced it in 1898. its a really good article. its obvious that MOST of the OTC preperations prior to the 1900's include some sort of narcotic element. India's famous drink Bhang contains, or originally contained elements of opium.... the article was written by David F. Musto, if you can't dig it up, i would be glad to send you a photocopy of it... jon -- E-Mail me for info on my hypertext cannabis database
