From: [c d l 0] at [ns1.cc.lehigh.edu] (CONRAD DANIEL LLOYD-KNIGHT) Newsgroups: talk.politics.drugs Subject: Pope condones drug use Date: 2 Sep 93 00:07:20 GMT Hi! just found this in today's (1st September, 1993) newspaper (Morning Call, Allentown, PA): on page B13, the headline reads: No sin in drinking beer, drinkers say. the article is about a group called Beer Drinkers of America who's local chapter is lobbying congressmen to opose the "sin tax" on beer. their argument is that beer drinking is not a sin. the second paragraph quotes the pope: -begin quote, reprinted without permission- "While taking drugs is always wrong, the moderate use of alcohol does not clash with moral prohibition and only abuse is to be condemned," the pontiff asserted at a Vatican conference last year. -end quote- So there you have it: the pope classifies alcohol with all other drugs and says that only ABUSE (not USE) is wrong! does anyone know the pope's address? i'd like to know if he thinks the moderate use of any other drugs is acceptable. not that i would follow his advice or anything, it would just be a handy thing to quote under suitable circumstances....
