Newsgroups: rec.games.frp.archives,rec.games.frp.dnd,rec.games.frp.misc From: [g j schmid] at [cantor.math.uwaterloo.ca] (Greg Schmidt) Subject: ARCHIVES: FTP Files (update) [1 of 5] Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1993 15:18:32 GMT This version of the FTP Files list is substantially different from the previous versions, so no patch is being posted. The changes have been made to make life simpler (both for me and the users of the list). Beginning with this version, and in all later versions, the path name to the file(s) containing the item in question is given. This makes it easier for you to find the file you want, and it makes it easier for me to keep an up-to-date list (by simply comparing new directory listings to the old ones). If the item is in a single file, the pathname will specify the file. If the item is in multiple files, standard UNIX wildcards will be used (ie. fiction/navero/*). In some cases (ie. the Tabolport archives), there may be subdirectories, which I do not differentiate from normal files (ie. campaign/tabolport/*). Also, all paths are relative to the "home" directory given below. This version is also split into 5 volumes, instead of the previous 3. Volumes 2-5 are only being posted to the r.g.f.archives group; this one is being cross- posted mainly for the benefit of those who read r.g.f.dnd but not .archives. This list is not quite as up-to-date as I would like; I have been working on it off and on for over a month, and I still have over 100K of listings to go through. However, I felt that posting it now would help those who will be away for the summer to pick up anything they want, and also give people a chance to comment on changes they would like to see to the format before everything is in. If you don't want to see this ever again, simply place the subject "FTP Files (update)" in your kill file, and I'll try to use the same subject every time. I will normally also post a smaller list, which will only contain additions or corrections from the last time the list was posted. It will have a subject line of "FTP Files (patch)" for your kill files, and can be applied to the previous version with the patch programme. If you don't want to see either, just put "FTP Files" in your kill file, and all of them will go away. Volume 2 of this set of postings contains fiction (both short stories and series). Volume 3 lists miscellaneous files, such as public domain RPGs, adventure ideas and other GM aids, lists, and so on. Volume 4 lists all the various net.books. Volume 5 is a completely new section listing RPG related programmes (character generators, etc.). If you want anything from this list, there are three things you can do. 1) First, try getting it by ftp. 2) If you don't have ftp access, attempt to contact the author. Most people that post these things like to know that there is interest out there, and this way you can let them know. 3) In extreme cases, ask me for directions on how to use my new semi-automated mail server. To make my life easier (and get replies out faster), I will only fill requests which conform to my specifications. Note that practically everything I save, I re-format to suit my personal tastes, so what you get from me may not look like what the author wrote (I do leave the text intact, apart from the occasional spelling correction). In particular, I like to break up large files into smaller parts (eg. one file for each of the monsters/items/whatever in the net.books). If you make use of this, I would appreciate hearing from you, just so I know that my work is not going to waste. Anything else is labelled descriptively. o If multiple archive sites are given, the item was found at more than one site. At least one archive site is given for each item (almost always mine). o If anyone can fill in any blanks, or provide newer email addresses for some of the authors listed (many are quite old), please let me know. o I do not vouch for the quality of anything contained herein. o There always seem to be lots of questions about how to extract text from various archived files. o If the filename ends in .Z, the answer is uncompress, a UNIX command which is also available in many incarnations for DOS or Macs. Simply type "uncompress filename", where filename does not have to have the .Z included (but may). Note that uncompress may also be invoked as "compress -d". o If the filename ends in .tar, the answer is tar, another UNIX command which has often been ported. To extract files of this sort, the command is "tar xvfo filename", where filename must include the .tar. This is often combined with compress to give *.tar.Z files (first uncompress, then untar). o If the filename ends in .zoo, the answer is zoo, a DOS command which has been ported to UNIX. To extract these files, use "zoo x filename", where filename does not have to have the .zoo included (but may). __________________________________________________________________ / _ \ Greg Schmidt ([Greg Schmidt] at [uwaterloo.ca]) \ \__) \ \ | "Master baiters catch more fish" | __ \ .sig anti-virus; copy me into yours for worry-free news/mail \ (_ \ \______________________________________________________________\___/
