Star Fleet Navigator v. 1.2 by Lucifer (truename: Rodney W. Morris) 1.0 History This program was created out of necessity. While running my Star Trek pbem, I realized that I was doing entirely too much math to figure out distances and times for space travel. Therefore, I hashed out a little code and decided to go ahead and put it out for public consumption. Version 1.0 and 1.1 didn't have the neat projection functions on it; that's the only real difference. 2.0 Instructions 2.1 Specifications This program utilizes the location system given in FASA's Star Trek RPG. This system, best seen in The Federation, utilizes an x-y graph to locate the planetary systems of the campaign universe. The central navigational beacon of the UFP is at location 0,0. Terra is coreward of that location, at 1.23 N, 2.79 W. The Federation is approximately 160 parsecs in diameter. Each whole number on each axis is 10 parsecs, or 32.7 light years. This program is also meant for TOS and TFS games, not TNG or DS9. If you are interested in a program for TNG or DS9, send me a message and I'll try and get version 1.3 out with that as an added option. As you may well know, in TOS and TFS, each Warp Factor is equal to the cube of the number in light years. Thus, if you travel for one year at Warp Factor 2, you will travel the equivalent of 8 light years distance (2 x 2 x 2). At Warp Factor 3, you travel 27 light years distance (3 x 3 x 3). In TNG and DS9, the factor is five, not three (so you'd go 32 light years at WF 2, and 243 ly at WF3). 2.2 Directions To run this program, you need vbrun300.dll, which can most likely be found in the Visual Basic or Windows directory of the ftp site you found this program in. Needless to say, you also need Microsoft Windows or a compatible program running. This program was tested on a 386DX with 4Mb of memory while running an old version of Stacker...you shouldn't have any memory problems with it. When the program is running, you need to enter the system coordinates for both systems in the upper, left-hand box. When entering coordinates south of the x-axis, enter them as negative numbers. When entering coordinates west of the y-axis, enter them as negative numbers as well (there is a little note on the program itself to remind you). By clicking on the 'compute' button, you will have the distance, in light years, displayed for you. Move to the next box, "Destination ETA estimation". Enter the Warp Factor you plan on having your ship travel and press compute. It will determine how many years, days, hours, minutes, and seconds it takes to move between system A and system B. A year is considered to have 365 days, a day 24 hours, an hour 60 minutes, and a minute 60 seconds. The optional projection estimator boxes below are meant to assist you if you know the distance and warp factor and want to determine how long it will take to move that distance (in case your beloved crew decide to alter their speed during flight). The "Estimated Distance at a given Time and Speed" box permits you to see how far a ship will go at a given warp factor and time. 3.0 Shameless self-promotion This is the first program I've posted publically. It is freeware, so don't send me money. I'll charge you for the ones that aren't particularly easy to create. _Any_ suggestions will be welcome, and if I use your suggestion in a future edition, I'll make sure it reaches your grubby little palms (or hard-drives, rather). E-mail all suggestions to csc3rwm@cabell.vcu.edu or snail-mail them to: Hellfire and Brimstone, Inc. c/o Rodney W. Morris 4440 Hollywood Dr. Richmond, VA 23234 Future products from Hellfire and Brimstone, Inc. are as follows. If any of the below products particularly appeal to you, drop me a line and I'll try to raise it a little on the "schedule". I cannot estimate when they'll be out, as this is a pasttime for me, not a career. Mythus Manager Shareware. A run-time manager for the Mythus system, by GDW, which includes a time-keeper, a computerized note-pad and timed reminder, weather generator, and die-roller. Mythus Character Generator Shareware. A character generator for the Mythus system, by GDW, which permits the user to roll and re-roll to his heart's desire, or just input the numbers he wants. When completed, it may actually permit printing of the character. Star Trek Character Generator Shareware. A character generator for FASA's Star Trek: The Role Playing game. The initial version will include the rules presented in the deluxe boxed edition. Future versions will include Romulan, Klingon, Merchant, and Intelligence characters. Star Trek Stardate Conversion System Freeware. A system that converts the major systems for stardates into Gregorian dates and vice-versa. Future, shareware versions may include notes on important events in Trek history. Fire, Fusion & Steel Architectural Design Program Shareware. This one's a LONG way off, but coming along nicely. It permits the creation of ships, guns, vehicles, etc. from GDW's Fire, Fusion & Steel sourcebook for the Traveller: TNE system. Initial versions will permit only starships, or firearms. Thanks for testing the Star Fleet Navigator and enjoy! Rodney W. Morris aka Lucifer >:} May 17, 1994 ÿ
