From: Greg Schmidt Newsgroups: rec.games.frp.archives Subject: ADMINISTRATIVE: Archive Sites Part 1. Date: 25 May 1994 08:44:31 -0400 Due to a lack of free time, this list is no longer being maintained. As such, it is becoming increasingly out-of-date. For example, the greyhawk archive has been rearranged, and moved to ftp.mpgn.com. My mail server (see below) will continue to fill requests, and the portions of the list referring to the machine 'large' are still mostly accurate. I may at some time in the future re-start this project, or, more realistically, post updates of what is available through my mail server. If anyone is interested in taking over the maintenance of this list, contact me, and I'll send you everything I have that might be of use. Volume 2 of this set of postings lists only fiction. Volume 3 lists general interest files, such as public domain RPGs, adventure ideas and other GM aids, lists, and so on. Volume 4 lists the various net.books. Volume 5 lists RPG related programmes (character generators, etc.). Each item has a pathname associated with it. If the item is in a single file, the pathname will specify the file. If the item is in multiple files, standard UNIX wildcards will be used (ie. fiction/navero/*). In some cases (ie. the Tabolport archives), there may be subdirectories, which I do not differentiate from normal files (ie. campaign/tabolport/*). Also, all paths are relative to the base directory given below. There are unfortunately some very long paths, so I have inserted a blank line between each entry, to improve readability. The site list below does not include all sites at which role-playing material is available; there are a couple of small sites I hope to add Real Soon Now. If you want anything from this list, there are several things you can do. 1) First, try getting it by ftp. 2) If you don't have ftp access, attempt to contact the author. Most people that posted or uploaded these things like to know that there is interest out there, and this way you can let them know. 3) There are mail servers out there (don't ask me where) which will perform an FTP for you, and mail the results. 4) In extreme cases, use my automated mail server. For the help file, send mail to hookup.net!large!sams-help (soon to be [sams help] at [large.UUCP]). Note that practically everything I save, I re-format to suit my personal tastes, so what you get from me may not look like what the author wrote (I do leave the text intact, apart from the occasional spelling correction). In particular, I like to break up large files into smaller parts (eg. one file for each of the monsters/items/whatever in the net.books). Anything else is labelled descriptively. o If multiple archive sites are given, the item was found at more than one site. The same item may have different filenames on the same site; this may indicate a different format, accidental duplication, or completely different files (it is normally obvious from the context). o Filenames containing ".ps" are generally PostScript files. Filenames containing ".tex" (except those containing ".text") are generally LaTeX files. If it's not obvious from the filename, I have indicated the type (WP is Word Perfect, WfW is Microsoft Word for Windows). o If anyone can fill in any blanks, or provide newer email addresses for some of the authors listed (many are quite old), please let me know. o I do not vouch for the quality of anything contained herein. o Make sure you set binary mode before ftping compressed or executable files. o There always seem to be lots of questions about how to extract text from various archived files. o If the filename ends in .Z, the answer is uncompress, a UNIX command which is also available in many incarnations for DOS or Macs. Simply type "uncompress filename", where filename does not have to have the .Z included (but may). Note that uncompress may also be invoked as "compress -d". The GNU package gzip can also uncompress these files. o If the filename ends in .gz (or possibly just .z), the answer is gzip, a GNU product available from a variety of sites, as DOS executables or source. Also, .taz and .tgz indicate gzipped tar files. o If the filename ends in .tar, the answer is tar, another UNIX command which has often been ported. To extract files of this sort, the command is "tar xvf filename", where filename must include the .tar. This is often combined with compress to give *.tar.Z files (first uncompress, then untar). o If the filename ends in .zoo, the answer is zoo, a DOS command which has been ported to UNIX. To extract these files, use "zoo x filename", where filename does not have to have the .zoo included (but may). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Greg Schmidt ([g--e--s] at [large.UUCP]) For help with my role-playing file server, send mail to [sams help] at [large.UUCP] For Infinity Publishing information, send mail to [infinity info] at [large.UUCP] Note: above addresses to [u--r] at [large.UUCP] may not yet be functional at your site. hookup.net!large!user is more guaranteed to work.
