>>>>>[Raven, I may not have a college education but I can tell you that there is such a thing as a sousaphone. Most people call it a tuba, but it is a different instrument. The tuba curls around in an oval and ends with the bell sticking straight up and is reserved for concert use. The sousaphone takes the tube and wraps it around the player and ends with a wider bell that's pointing straight forward, more or less. The sousaphone is a marching version of the tuba and is so named for John Philip Sousa, a hip musician in the late nineteenth century who wrote lotsa marches for the old US Marine Corps Band. Sousaphones DO exist (I know, I saw many in my college marching band) and were developed for a very simple reason: A tuba is quite a massive instrument, and one would have to support its weight solely with the arms were one to march or walk with it. For extended periods this can be exceedingly tiresome. As a result, John Philip Sousa altered the instrument such that the weight was transfered to the shoulder, and hence much easier to endure for long periods. ]<<<<< -- Doctor Doom <15:51:47/02-01-54> >>>>>[ Whoops. He found copies of MagnaTech's corporate history. Well, here it is. MagnaTech was originally called Hazeltine back in the late 20th century. Hazeltine was an electronics company that was based in the Long Island/New York City area that did a lot of work for the former US deptarment of defense. In the early 21st century, Haleltine was bought out by a man named Peter Andreyovitch. Hazeltine continued to do fairly well, until the treaty of denver. The end of the US, and the beginning of the UCAS caused major cutbacks in the DoD, and hazeltine had few contracts. IN the next few years, the company was forced to diversify and merge/buy other smaller technology companies to survive. After a number of mergers, the company finally changed it's name to MagnaTech. Magna changed hands twice since then, and is currently being split between Dragon's Den and Yoshida Tech (as we all know). There doesn't seem to be anything mysterious in their history until 2047, when the company started doing extremely well while just about every other technology/security firm was losing money or only breaking even. This period of unexplainable growth is similar to the suprising resistance Magna was able to put up against the Dragon's Den/Yoshida takeover last year. I'll wager that if you superimosed maps of the tunnels that run everywhere under Manhattan you'll find that at least one of them goes under the Magna building. All of a sudden we heard some screams come from the other part of his penthouse along with several muffled gunshots. The Johnson, dumb like most, sent his Razorboy to find and eliminate the intruder while he but on his Armor Vest. I decided this would be go time to leave so, I packed up my stuff and got out my Manhunter. Johnson's bodyguard got in position to guard the main door into the room and drew a Roomsweeper. Well, I had just got my smartgun hooked up (really should consider getting a smartlink installed) when Harada busted down the door. I don't know what happened to the Razorboy, but Harada had blood on his hands. The bodyguard opened up on Harada, but he just danced about and wasn't hit. Now I'm not saying he avoided the brunt of the blast, Harada dodged every last stinking pellet! I ran for the other door squeezing off a few rounds Harada's way. I tell you I've never missed a target at that range with a smartgun, Harada must be some sort of cyber-deity. Harada decided to stop the game. He pulled a Predator from his jacket and with one simple motion stop the bodyguard through the heart and gave me a viscous gut wound. He must have been using APDS ammo because he killed the bodyguard with that bullet when it had to go through an Armor Jacket, Ultra-Vest, and Ortho-skin. I stumbled out of the room and somehow managed to get out of the building alive. I don't think Harada cared if I lived because I heard him calmly conversing with the Johnson as I scrambled for the elevator. It took me well over 2 weeks to get some sorta connection between the proxy voter and anybody of signifigance. I was checking his college records when I saw a name that rang lots of mental bells. It seemed that he used to room with a Wendel Trevor, Jr. I couldn't remember why that set me off so I set up a general data scan and let it run for a while. It turned up Lt. General Wendel Trevor UCAS Army. Sound interesting? Then read on. I started doing some research on General Trevor and found many little facts than when looked at along mean nothing, but when added up spelled major league corruption. It seems to be that back around 2042 when Trevor's son and his friend graduated, the general had just been put in charge of various procurement jobs the Army needed. The two young men began working for a little investment company. Their job was to buy and sell stock for individuals who don't what there names mentioned. The two began to do quite well in the company and then suddenly in 2044 Wendel Jr. moved to a more reputable firm. I was able to obtain a memo from the Army solictor's files that the General had come under investigation in a possible corruption charge. I guess they didn't like the idea of his son working for a more or less criminal front. Well, everything cooled down until 2046 when Roger Quention (gee, did I forget to mention his name earlier?) went solo. He stoled a bunch of the companies clients and began to buy, sell, and control stock like it was a game. He became a member of the MagnaTech board in 2047, just a few months after the company underbid many larger corporations for major government contracts. This doesn't seem relevent until you go look back at many of MagnaTech's government contracts. A good number of them were handeled by General Trevor's office! General Trevor's income tax papers starting in 2048 also include a marked increase in earnings from dividends. This leaves you suspect but two more facts prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that General Trevor is the Secret Man of MagnaTech. The first if the fact that Roger Quention now holds 5% of Yoshida Tech. The second is the fact that Yoshida picked up a nice government contract just a week after obtaining MagnaTech, a job MagnaTech was in the running for and that Trevor's office is incharge of. So, who wants to bet that the UCAS Army had something to do with how MagnaTech was able to take its computer offline without flopping? My pet theory is that they borrowed some government equipment to route thing onto the Matrix. The Herald of Los Angeles was able, however, to obtain an interview with Gerome Rothsby, of Rothsby & Childs, the contracters hired to repair damages caused by the outage. --[paste interview]-- H: Mr. Rothsby, I really appreciate you meeting with us on such short notice. R: Don't trouble yourselves about it; we at Rothsby & Childs believe strongly in the need to maintain communication with the public, so that we can minimize the chance for any mis. .. H: Yes, sir. We understand fully your position. Now. . .If we could turn to matters at hand. . . R: Of course. Well, it seems that some sort of static discharge occurred in the Highlands area. While the discharge was unable to affect the power grid, it was powerful enough to damage some systems, namely water and sewage transportation systems in the area. H: I see, sir. Then, what you are telling me is that there was actually never any damage to the power grid at all. R: Not from the discharge itself, no. H: In your professional opinion sir, what was the cause of the power outage which occurred in the Highlands area last night? R: Well, it appears that the sewage systems were all shunted to the Highlands area due to a freak mismanaging of routing commands caused by the discharge. H: So, then, the backed-up sewage transport was actually responsible for the loss of power last night? R: Yes, ma'am. It would appear so. --[end of interview]-- This power outage is just the latest in a series of strange occurrences in the Highlands area during the last twelve days. Last night's incident, though not causing any serious damage, was the most severe of the week's. Village Security has been unable to determine if there is any link between the outage and recent events in the Highland area. No representative of VS was available for comment. >--[end download file]--< >>>>>[ Brandywine, you should try to find a better way to convince Serria to stay in bed. I might be in the same position. Anyway, here's the stuff. ***** 5/23/49 PRECISION ARTS LOG :MATTHEW STEVENS :HEAD RESEARCH :#47 PROJECT: :ALPHA.OMEGA The project seems to be coming along well, with the expected glitches. The forced twinning in vitrio occurred better than expected with little or no damage immdiately apparent. If both embryos are found to be viable, the chemical changes will be introduced as soon as possible. If both survive through birth, mechanical testing may also begin. They are expected to be fully developed within 10 years. The testing of biological memory allocation may or may not be coming at all. It is impossible to tell at this stage. The child is brilliant, but erratic. We simply do not know enough about the brain to have undertaken a project like this. She experiences fugues, and then overwhelming memories of her past; a thing we thought we had erased entirely. I suspect that many of those memories are not truly her own, but synthesised by her mind. Perhaps it is trying to fill in the blank spots we so crudely created. Perhaps some more modification may be helpful, though I would prefer not change the original functionings too much. It is unfortunate that many from the control group died. Regarding the girl: she is matures at an alarming rate. Even after being removed from the vat, she continued to grow at such a pace that she needed to be hospitalized. The spurt seems to have ceased now, though. 3/14/50 Having survived birth, both subjects have undergone various tests. The controls have been implemented, and modifications came out perfect in one. The other was born with an extra lobe in his brain. It appears to be just so much extra flesh. Unfortunate. Had hoped to use him as the perfect control subject. He will probably die within a few years. Until then, we can use him for the more radical experiments. They both continue to mature at a steady pace. The target date of 59 may be able to be boosted by a few years if all goes well. Testing of all other subjects has been abandoned except for one. The subject Dawn is doing well, though her physical growth ceased a year ago. In all, this is probably a good thing. She has been so heavily modified that any uncontrolled growth might kill her. The memories have stopped, and she is progressing mentally faster than expected. Whether this is due to the biological modifications made early in the experiment or to the hardware we have since installed is as of yet untested. ***** The files huge. I have the rest of it, if anyone wants it. Someone asked me a while ago *what* I am. The question took me by surprise. I decided to find out.]>>>>> -DOA- <2/10/54 /13:27:38> >>>>>[ Yep, Quention was in the Eurowars, unofficially of course. I believe that he was sent by Trevor specifically to take the chem plant. I shouldn't be telling this, but I was in the UCAS demolitions squad back then, and Quention's unit departed europe from the base I was stationed at. I cornered on of his seargents in the NCO club, and loosened his tongue with a bottle of Aztlan Gold Tequila. He told me enough about the caper to figure out the rest years later. The sarge was listed as MIA two weeks later.]<<<<< ---Big Jake <12:23:41/02-10-54> >>>>>[ Another tidbit about MagnaTech's secret lab. According to the logs, they attempted to repeat the "Alpha weapon" project (that's Tommy Harada's "given" name) several times and met with failure. What they ended up with was a bunch of flatlined meat bodies. The rest of the clones they made were somehow non-viable for the purposes of this "Theta cycle", and suspect that a spontaneous random mutation, an X-factor that occured in Tommy Harada's gene sample allowed the experiment to suceed in his case. They did manage, through cyberware and rudimentary training, to make the failed clones into organic robots, capable of performing programmed tasks, but not able to respond to unexpected situations. They're currently part of MagnaTech's hostile environment team. If you're listening Tirandor, you had better call off the contract on Harada. If you should somehow get the lab from me, or re-create it it won't work until someone can figure out what happened, and Tommy is the key. Oh, and I found your new satellite uplink, I can disable it at any time. Think about it next time you send a bunch of amatuers after me! ]<<<<< ---Dark Elf <12:36:19/02-10-54> >>>>>[ DE, I could lose my job and my life for this so I hope you listen. Tirandor is sending up my Yellowjacket squadron loaded with sensors and with orders to investigate anything that even resembles the labs sensor signature. I know you don't trust me very much since the time I nearly took out a skyscraper while you and Jake were aboard, but you must this time! ]<<<<< ---BobK <12:40:31/02-10-54> DDI Security, Air division. >>>>>[ You're full of drek Bob! You'd never stick your neck out for anyone, even yourself. You know as well as we do that Tirandor occaisionally monitors this server! You wouldn't tell us drek unless that fragging dragon told you to do it! This reeks of a sad attempt to get us to move the lab so DDI can grab it in transit! No cigar for you Bob! Go back to your little corp job and be a little person slaving for that fragging dragon! ]<<<<< ---OddBall <12:45:13/02-10-54> >>>>>[ RUFUS!?!?!?! The rumors were true then, MagnaTech created a viable AI! That's why Yoshida stepped in! Tirandor was after the bio-lab, but Yoshida stopped him to get a prize just as great, RUFUS! RUFUS, if you're out there and listening, get in touch with me! I believe that someone has given you false system parameters. Your timestamp reads the year as 2063 when it is really 2054! If you want to find out why please try to get in tougch with me! I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm interested in your system architecture. You may also have valuable information about MagnaTech which may solve all of our problems! ]<<<<< ---Dark Elf <12:50:13/02-10-54> >>>>>[ DE, I can confirm that your "friend" BobK is a fragging liar. DDI does not currently have enough sensor arrays to outfit more than one helicopter, nor have they received any more equipment. My sources have seen several divers in the harbor near the Intrepid though. I'm not shure what this means but it may be related. I sent a fire elemental to check out the Intrepid. It didn't find any barriers or astral resistance until it tried to enter the hangar deck. All other areas of the carrier were open. Tirandor is probably cooking up some suprise on the hangar deck, either that or he doesn't want anyone peeking at his lair! I wouldn't even bother trying the security camera trick you used to observe the MagnaTech meeting in November, he's probably disabled them. ]<<<<< ---Napalm <12:58:05/02-10-54> >>>>>[ DOA, I wouldn't worry about Brandywine, she tends to be really careful about everything she does - and for someone of her caliber, I find that extremely surprising. Heaven knows, although in a different way, she is far more powerful than I, yet I still am the one taking the risks. Another thing, I have the premises under surveillance. If anything happens - I will be over as quickly as my "Kathy" (My modified Hughes Stallion) can get me there. Hope that isn't put to the test. Of course, I couldn't stop too much here in the matrix..... but I am watching out because it is important to Brandy. Take care. ]<<<<< -- CrossFire <15:22:17/02-10-54> >>>>>[Oh Frag!!!!!! The dreck just hit the fan. We now have ANOTHER AI in the net. This is going to get ugly really soon. Someone ought to put a ban on making them. I'm sure not all of them are going to be benevolent to us deckers.]<<<<< -Harlequin ***** NORM, what you experienced is what those of us whoa are magically active called ASTRAL SPACE or more specifically the ETHERIC PLANE. If you would like more info I would look into finding a copy of Akiko Kano's and Arthur White Eagle's "Theory of Metaphysical Phenomena".
