All I know about the Universal Brotherhood I learned from Doctor Doom. Never tangled with 'em by name myself ... and now that I know what I know, I don't ever want to. You may ask, is the Doctor's info good? Absolutely. Not satisfied with my word alone? Ask around, the man maybe hanging on for dear life right now, but while he was still active, he had and still has a very respectable rep. At the low levels the Universal Brotherhood, or the UB as most everybody calls it -- those who don't like it, anyway -- is not all that bad an organization. Big on those self-help, release your inner potential, get-in-touch-with-the-real-you, support group, sorta psycho-babble. And it /does/ help some people ... at the beginning. Most people think that the UB is some sorta pan-theistic hokey religion akin to some of the other examples of Eastern pseudo-mysticism, and some have claimed there's a connection between it and an organization from back in the late twentieth century called Dianetics, also known as the Church of Scientology. Whatever its history, underneath this esoteric, altruistic veneer is a far darker purpose. Remember a simsense star from a few years back called Euphoria? The gripping finale to her career was the only role in which she died, and then she sorta disappeared with the cred, it seems. Lemme shoot something past you that just might blow yer mind: What you saw was what really happened. Shocker, eh? Yeah, I didn't believe it either 'til I saw the Doctor's files. Unfortunately, they're all under lock and key in Hlidskjalf right now, so what I tell you now is from my rather spotty memory. The truth is that the UB are BUGS! That's right. Now, as you've probably guessed by now, this ain't public knowledge -- people get sued OR WORSE saying stuff like this out in the open without proof -- or even /that/ well known in the shadows. That's why this message is encrypted. You've heard of spirits of the forest, of the sea, and of the air, right? Well, how about INSECTS? And believe me, chummer, you don't want to be around when they's hungry. How's this for a little turn around, they'll be stepping on /you/. It seems that at least some of 'em (again, this isn't first hand, but what the good Doctor showed me almost made me cough up a lung) need human bodies to ... well ... inhabit -- kinda like how some insects lay their eggs in a competitor species' body. These grotesque hybrids range from the semi-human (You may have seen one of their many game-show-host charisma Public Relations Reps ... with the odd, faceted eyes? Take a second look ... remind you of anything?) to the down-right alien. I mean, so weird you freakin' throw a lot of lead in their direction and don't even BOTHER to ask questions later except like, "What the FRAG was that?" The /real/ trick of the Brotherhood is that they seem to have some sort of cooperation (and the details -- or just my memory -- is sketchy) between the different species, or Totems you might call 'em. Normally, it seems, like in the wild, different Insect Totems fight one another ... very very violently. There's even a case in California where two towns supposedly went to war (like red & black ants, almost) and pretty much annihilated one another. I'd like to be able to tell you some names, but unless the boys can jog my memory, I can't bring it to mind. Still, their purpose, you ask? I'm no expert, but it seems they just lure people in with all sorts of promises of unlock-the-secrets-of-the-mind, wake-up-and-smell-the-coffee to feed their growing numbers. They look at us like a natural resource to be tapped, not as human beings. One other thing, not all the spirits need physical forms ... just like some normal spirits don't need 'em. And, like insects in the wild, they do have Queen spirits. Really nasty. Specifics I can't give you. I don't have any. The only hard info I have seen, like I said, is in Doom's possession, and he's not taking calls right now. *whew* Well, like I said, it's a bit spotty ... but I hope you think you got your money's worth. If not, give me another ring, and the next memory dump (the organic kind) will be on the house. Oh, and if you find the info useful, don't thank me, thank Doom. ]<<<<< -- Jack Hack <04:15:31/10-01-55> >>>>>[ Oh, and Kor, on the Dante thing: I'm not involved 'cause I wasn't invited to be, not that I feel snubbed, mind you. And if you wanna get in touch with the late, great (and MUCH lamented) Powerhouse's intended, Cerise, I suggest you contact Nightstalker or Raven the Mage, as they are the ones most likely to be around her. ]<<<<< -- Jack Hack <04:16:41/10-01-55> ***** PRIVATE: Kor >>>>>[ Oh, and on the each of us wagin' our private little wars, well ... Then I met a bright, impressible lad, Hangtime. /I/ grew up fighting, but this boy was so wet behind the ears when I first met that combing his hair was like the parting of the Red Sea. Took the kid under my wing and I'm teaching him as much as I know. Sonic's not so inexperienced, he's just new to shadowrunning, and subtlety. And I met a guy with real class, Doctor Doom. He, and people I met because of him, changed a lot of my perceptions about shadowrunners, about people, about life in general ... comradery and self-sacrifice. Now what I do isn't so selfish, because I know what its like not to be all on your own ... to even have friends. Like runnin' interference during the Ganz shenanigans ... sure we were gettin' payed, but it was a favor for a friend. Fenris: Look Lowe, I'm sick of your denial, he (gesturing to Powerhouse) knew nothing, he was murdered simply because he defended those whom he cared about. Decide now, will you support blatant and indescriminate murder. (As Fenris speaks a ball of light appears in his hand, growing slowly.) Lowe: (whining) But.... Fenris: But nothing, it was murder! Lowe: (broken) All rig.... (Lowe stops mid-word, as behind Fenris, a wasp spirit forms, it draws it's arm back, about to strike, but as the arm descends a spectral wolf flys past both Fenris and Lowe, pushing the wasp back and knocking it to the floor. Fenris spins as the wasps flings the wolf across the room, it hits the wall heavily, and yelps, but the wasp is vulnerable, Fenris quickly releases his spell, the wasp screams, then fades to nothingness.) Fenris: Othello, go for help... Lowe: What's going on... (As the wolf disappears, more wasp spirits begin appearing in the room, Fenris kicks open the door just behind them and shoves Lowe through) Fenris: They are after you... quick, go through the door opposite. Lowe: What about you? Fenris: I am wolf, I will fight! (Apparently the matter is settled, Lowe hesistates only a couple of seconds before moving towards the other door, then the screen splits, half shows Fenris join with the spirits, ducking there blows as he blasts one, the other, as Lowe gets half way across the room, two spirits manifest before him, as he cowers from them, one is sliced open from head to toe, the other crackles with arcane energy, both scream, then disappear. Your attention is then drawn back to the other screen, Fenris is almost overwhelmed, but then the tide of insects is thrown back as two earth elementals appear, some of the other wasps in the room seem to be fighting invisible opponents.) Fenris: What the? That was quick! (More wasps are forming, in both rooms, but Lowe has reached the other door and opened it, within you can see many strange article, such as drums and rattles, as Lowe enters two wasps throw themselves at him, and he screams, falling backwards, however both are rebounded off the open door, smoke rising from their arms. At the other end of the room, several wasps are trying to get at Fenris' back, but each is cloven in half by an unseen assailant, while Fenris and the elementals are slowly harvesting the other group of spirits.) +++++Emergency: Lifeform approaching Fenris: Someone else is coming, hope it's a friend... Packman: Boss wants you to come in, so does the other broad. I never thought I would think it would be possible to have such a low opinion of you.... Commander Drake, you show a lacking in finding a fitting revenge for one person. Sure you defeated him physically, but do you truly think that matters to one who is so numb from running - numb from fighting? No, it's merely a vacation for him. And probably a better one than he can afford normally too. Most of what he has done in the most recent past has been one large bill. Such shame. Almost like capturing a domesticated dog. Only a mere matter of time. HAMMER, on the other hand, at least shows some creativity in getting thorns removed. He doesn't have infinite resources like some here may think, yet he gets the job done. Did he truly care about Shadowfox or Doomsday? Oh sure he'll say that they were upmost in his concerns and the state's. But let's get real. They don't know the German government like I do. I represent to the German government what Shadowfox is to the Sioux government. Only I know more than he did about the state of current affairs. So what does HAMMER do? He goes after everyone he can find that was connected to me. I'm not sure how it was pulled off, but unless I'm mistaken, there should have been no reason for Universal Brotherhood to go after DragonEyes. That effectively throws in Blitzkrieg and Scarface (no, I still haven't figured out a reverse to the spell) to the mess. Shadowfox, Doomsday, and I ran into peacekeeping troops in Africia. Interesting considering the fact that the merc force that we were in was specifically hired to free slaves down there. Interesting when you add to that the small little insignificant fact that MET2000 was the troops used to keep the peace as it was. Also, it's kind of neat that soon after they arrived there was a break up of the merc forces. The evidence I received points to the fact that Shadowfox and Doomsday caused the break up. I find that hard to believe. Shadowfox's past would indicate that he would sooner cut his own throat then kill 20 good people under him. Doomsday is about the same... But yet, I find it interesting that a Japenese hit team almost caught me by surprise. Shadowfox, you care to explain your gift? I didn't cause the break up. I was just trying to keep alive, and you ended up in Sioux territory. Doomsday must of figured out something because he went to Germany of all places. So Shadowfox, you know what I think? I think you don't care about the others. You are content to lie down the gun, even though in your gut you _know_ I didn't cause the break up; even though you _know_ that Doomsday had no good reason to be in Germany. Still you sent a hit team after me. Guess your afraid because I know to much of you. Where does that leave me? I don't know. I guess it leaves me in a world without friends. I've been trying to sort out what happened, and in some parts I'm still confused. I suppose I'll just start at the beginning... I was really surprised when Crashkit posted his first message out, and for a while I thought it was a lure to get me back into the Doc Wagon game. That's why my responses were so cryptic. Now you have to understand that I didn't know who this DragonEyes guy was, and Sorry, I get carried away. I flew into Colorado late Thursday night, and met up with Crashkit at a little club called the Teepee. Nice place, kinda quiet. We talked about old times 'til about one, and then he finally got down to business. Seems he had a patient, designation Morrison, who had aquired a nasty wasting disease. I'd heard of the case, seeing as how I keep the channels open with my old DW buddies. Anyway, Crashkit managed to sneak me in for a look, since I figured if I could help the guy, it'd save us a lot of running around. Not a chance. Nastiest thing I'd ever seen, probably a tailored virus. Scourge had set us up transportation to the Zuni reservation. We checked into the Big Sur hotel, and were picked up Friday morning by a limo. Had to dress in a suit, and carry a briefcase. After that we were driven to an airport, where we changed into 'travelling' clothes, and were flown by helicopter to a second destination. Nobody spoke to us, and they didn't seem receptive to conversation. I didn't really want to know. At the second destination, we were provided with a jeep and a map. Took us most of the rest of the day to get to the contact site. Crashkit had the right of it. The place was eerie. Felt dead. Then I saw why. Two 'men', and I use the term loosely, had staked out a small building off the main road. Wierdest damn thing I've ever seen. They looked like something out of the old movie 'The Fly.' Astrally, they looked even worse. At that point I'm thinking embodied spirit, since no sane person deals with insect spirits. Crashkit noticed something wrong with them, but I figured he'd panic if I explained. Or maybe I would have. By the time we arrived at their previous location, they were already across the street and trying the door. It seemed to be locked. One took two steps back, and slammed into the door, shattering it. He must have been immensly strong. Anyway, the other guy was right behind him, and they plowed through the door. About three feet in, the first guy struck a barrier of some kind and bounced back into the second, toppling both of them to the ground. One of them had a radio, and I heard sounds from it, but I couldn't make out what they were saying. One of the guys spoke back, and I thought I heard him say 'backup.' Crashkit and I decided to make our move before they could get help, and started aroun d a building toward them. I shouted 'NOW!' to Crashkit, figuring we had the advantage when they were down. Suddenly, DragonEyes came running out of the building, leaping over the two downed men. He made it about 20 feet before one of them shot him in the back with a heavy pistol , knocking him down. I'm not much of a fighter, but I know when to start shooting. So I did. It was just like in the movies, I fired a three round at the guy with the pistol, and shot it out of his hand. I'm not sure which of us was more surprised. I was expecting Crashkit to take him, but he ran for DragonEyes, and the guy stepped over and caught him in the gut with his shoulder in a kind of tackle. By the time I got over my surprise, the other guy was two feet away from me, and, well, he wasn't a guy any more. He had this wierd claw/pincer at the end of his arm, and he was swinging at me. I knew it was over, but he suddenly froze in place. Had to be magic, but I didn't know from where. I didn't really care either. I was so scared I guess I went berserk, screaming as I emptied the rest of my clip into this thing's torso. Hysterical strength gives you great control over the weapon's recoil, I guess. I must have hit him twenty times. There was blood everywhere. I almost puked when I saw it was green. I ran for Crashkit, who was being strangled by the one handed guy. Crashkit's eyes widened when he saw me approach, and he passed out. I scooped up the dropped Predator, and shot the guy six or seven times. Somewhere in there he pulled a knife and cut me a bit, but I don't really remember how or when. Right around the corner, they had parked their van. I grabbed Crashkit, threw him inside, and went back for DragonEyes. He was barely concious, and trying to heal himself, but I could tell it wasn't working, he was too damaged. Reflexes kicked in, and I stabilized him, and put him in the van. Something(s) slammed into my shoulder, throwing me almost the full length of the van. I could feel my right arm going numb as I climbed into the driver's seat. Thank god it had a steering wheel. Two seconds later we were on the move. Crashkit woke up and asked what was going on. I shouted at him to close the back doors, since I knew it wouldn't take the reinforcements long to get mobile. The locals watched us drive by, with these blank looks on their faces. Wierder and wierder. They caught up with us real quick, and I was sure they had better knowledge of the area, and at least one rigger. No problem, I can outdrive any wimpy rigger any day of the week. Small arms fire punched holes in the back of the van as we flew through the town. I'd completely lost two of the three vehicles, but the third was keeping up. And one of my tires was out. It was time for drastic measures. I tried to spin the wheel to cut right, but my arm couldn't handle it, and we bounced off a building an d back into the street. It was looking bad. DragonEyes woke up, and Crashkit helped him sit up and look around. I could see my Treats were barely holding. The guy should have been out. Anyway, he says 'Go left at the next road, and get on the main road out of town.' Then he starts muttering. A spell. 'It'll kill you, you fool." I say. He says "Can you outrun them?" I gotta admit, not with one arm. In what's left of the rearview mirror, I see something forming around the van. An illusion. I wait until the last possible moment, and take the left. Behind me I see a van continue up the road. I hang another left, and we're clear. I looked back, and DragonEyes was out cold. Crashkit was working on him, and I could tell he was alive. Not a bad extraction. DragonEyes with some unhealed old wounds and a couple slugs being removed from his back. Crashkit's voice won't be the same f or a while, but other than a few cracked ribs and some bruises, he was okay. Me, well as best I could tell, twenty-seven stitches worth of knife and claw cuts, not too deep. (Thank god for armored coats.) At least two small caliber slugs in my right shoulder/arm. God only knows what else. I was feeling kinda tired. My old HTR team would have been proud. Heck, they might even let me carry a gun next time. Got a chance to talk to DragonEyes, and learned a few things. Even a bit about healing. Never really understood the Shamanic thing, but it's interesting all the same. I guess DragonEyes is going to continue along dealing with this 'bug' thing, and I fi gured I'd go along for the ride.]<<<<< -- Vorien <12:37:28/10-06-55> >>>>>[ I hate when I find things like this... +++++ transmit article Universal Brotherhood continues to save lives.
