TATAU TOUR OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

Second Auckland Tattoo Gathering
November 14th through 20th, 2001

First Wellington Tattoo Convention
November 23rd through 25th, 2001

The following information about the New Zealand conventions is courtesy of Corinna Hunziker:

"Following the success of the conventions in Samoa and Auckland in 1999, we are now pleased to announce that we are doing it all again.

After Samoa 2001, Aotearoa (New Zealand) will be hosting events in Auckland and Wellington.

A group of Auckland tattoo shops and enthusiasts will be host to a week long event, this includes a three day convention in central Auckland. The rest of the gathering will include activities and discussion forums to learn, share and participate in the diverse nature of tatau and taa moko in Aotearoa.

Topics will cover issues of cultural, historical, spiritual and gender significance within the tatau, taa moko and tattooing communities, investigating the unifying aspects of the tattoo phenomenon. There will also be opportunity to discuss issues that occurred at the 1999 Gathering and Convention.

This gathering is in memory of our dear friend and colleague Paulo Suluape, and will be in celebration of one of his key messages, that of "Unity". We will also have a memorial to commemorate his life.

From Auckland we travel the length of the North Island, to New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington. In Wellington we will be celebrating the opening of the National Tattoo Museum of New Zealand (www.mokomuseum.co.nz) and have a two day convention in central Wellington.
