MADAM B’S MOLASSES GINGERBREAD 2 cups sour milk 2 tsp caraway seeds 8 oz butter 6 cups flour 2 cups molasses 2-½ tbsp baking soda 4 tbsp ginger Warm the milk and butter together until the butter melts. Stir in the molasses. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and ginger. Stir the flour and caraway seeds into the mix, enough to make a very wet and loose batter. Pour into two loaf pans, two 8-inch square cake pans, or a large heavy oven-safe skillet. Adapted from “Mrs. Winslow’s Domestic Receipt Book for 1876” (1875).
