"I say this because I have lived through civilian disarmament once in another country. "I am Cuban by birth. Castro began his dictatorship by demanding that all Cuban turn in their guns. He said what anti-gun spokesmen in the U.S. now echo: "Guns, for what?" "It was easy for Castro; gun registration paved the way. As far back as 1912, there were major civil disturbances in Cuba. Because of them, a law was passed requiring a license for every firearm including hunting rifles. "The government set up a general registry in the Department of the Interior. All that Castro had to do was seize the Registry- a complete inventory of privately owned guns- and go down the list...The registry revealed exactly what firearms that I owned. "Castro's Communist took from me a Smith & Wesson revolver, a Winchester rifle and a Sarasqueta shotgun. Needless to say, I received no compensation, and I never expect to see them again. "But my personal loss is nothing compared with Cuba's loss of freedom. We in America ought to remember what happened in Cuba. "After registration comes confiscation."
