From: [Z--W--f] at [cris.com] (Todd Louis Green) Newsgroups: rec.guns Subject: First day with a Glock 27 Date: 21 May 1996 00:23:28 -0400 I got my first opportunity to take my new Glock 27 ["sub-compact" baby Glock in .40SW] to the range today. Short version of story: buy one. Long version of story: What a great little gun. I had none of the problems some other people have experienced. My magazines all loaded to 9 rounds easily, and the gun would seat a full magazine without problem, even with a round chambered. I tried this with all three magazines without fail. When using the magazines from my Glock 23 the gun had no problems, regardless of how much pressure, from any direction, I put on the dangling magazine. The gun did not kick noticeably harder than the G23 ["compact" Glock in .40SW], and while muzzle flip was more pronounced it was not problematic. I didn't have a timer but I'm sure my split times were higher, but only by a little bit. By the end of the session I was center-punching the target 5 times in 4 seconds from a low ready at 25 feet without problem. Never did get off that sixth shot, tho [gotta love those automatic targets at the NRA range...]. The gun's accuracy was UNCANNY. I shot an offhand 0.6" group [yes, that's a bit more than half an inch from center of one .4" hole to the center of the farthest .4" hole] into [obviously] a single hole. Now, it was only 25 feet away and I'm sure it was more lucky fluke than skill [as anyone who's seen me shoot could attest to] but I was still impressed. And the load was 135gr CorBon JHPs, too. To make matters "worse," my G27 came equipped with the 8# trigger. Altho it is definitely noticeably different from the 5.5# trigger, accuracy in both rapid and slow fire did not seem to be affected. I may even get the eight-pounder for my 23 now. The G27 was accurate with everything I shot, out to 25 yards [where I was getting 3" groups offhand with Winchester 180gr practice loads]. The gun digested [gotta stop reading gun comics, you learn the stupid phrases] 90 rounds of Winchester "white-label" 180gr, 50 rounds of Winchester "X" 155gr TC, 10 rounds of 135gr CorBon JHP, 5 rounds of Remington 165gr Golden Saber, and 5 rounds of my medium-load [950fps out of a 4" barrel] 180gr copper-plated reloads. In the total of 160 rounds, there was not a single failure of any sort, although on one round the slide's movement was so slow I thought time had stopped for a moment. The only real complaint I have, whiner that I am, is that the gun began to hurt my hand after about 75 rounds. I'm used to rubber grip sleeves on my other Glock and my HK USP40, so the rough plastic checkering doesn't get along well with my Palmolive-enhanced delicate skin. 8-) By the end of the 160 rounds, my hand was sore. Again, this is because of the checkering, and I felt the same way about my G23 and USP, which is why I got the sleeves -- the recoil is not at all unpleasant for me at least. My G27 came practically overflowing with Glock Bronze. I got it all over my fingers before I even disassembled the gun the first time. No problem there, just an observation. Also, and this may be a quirk of my G27: the take-down levers/switches/whatevers cannot be manipulated when the slide is forward. So the slide needs to be retracted with one hand, and both bits need to be pulled down with some force with the other hand, and then the slide needs to be allowed forward. This is harder than it sounds, and I'm a bit peeved. It makes taking down the gun a royal pain. I tried locking the slide back, but when the slide is released forward the take-down levers pop back into the up position. Once I finally got the gun apart to clean it after shooting I found a good deal of unburned powder right where the guide rod assembly mates up with the barrel. Perhaps I used two drops of oil for the barrel instead of one when I prepped the gun before going to the range. Overall, I found the gun to be a fantastic shooter. Personally, once I got over the "hey, my pinky aint on the gun" idea, it didn't feel any different than shooting a "full-size" gun with a normal grip. You're really just not conscious of it when you're shooting. And the gun is SMALL. Easily fits in baggy front pockets [joy for the 8# trigger] and I just can't imagine getting those Pearce grip extenders for it. While I bought it primarily as a back-up gun, I wouldn't feel the least bit underarmed carrying it as my main arm [tho I'd insist on a second one as back-up still 8-) ]. Well, I've waxed on long enough, if anyone has any specific questions for me please feel free to e-mail me. ___________________________________________ Todd Louis Green [Z--W--f] at [cris.com] http://www.cris.com/~Zenwolf/ On your tombstone will be two dates, separated by a dash.
