Here are details on a few results: LIBERTARIAN ELECTED TO WASHINGTON STATE SUPREME COURT Seattle, WA - Libertarians in Washington state are ecstatic that Richard B. Sanders, a long-time member of the state and national Libertarian Party, was elected to the Washington Supreme Court yesterday. In a stunning upset, Sanders, a Bellevue attorney, defeated incumbent Supreme Court Justice Rosselle Pekelis, a Lowry-appointee, for the 3-year term. Sanders is a strong advocate of property rights and civil liberties, and has won some high-profile property-rights cases. McCally hailed Sanders' election as "a victory for property owners, tax payers, and civil libertarians." McCally said, "This election also shows how mainstream libertarian views have become in the last decade. People know that government is too intrusive, too corrupt, and just doesn't work. They responded to Richard's campaign themes." [Above from Press Release of the Washington State LP] LP Success in Georgia: Two new LP City Councilmembers, one defeated sales tax increase Two members of the Libertarian Party of Georgia won election to their city councils on November 7th, both in hard-fought races. Bruce Van Buren won election to the Avondale Estates City Commission, placing first in a field of five candidates vying for two open seats. Van Buren's campaign was managed by LP Campaign Committee Chairman Ron Crickenberger. The campaign spent about $2,200.00 to win 428 votes. Turnout was high at over 55%. The campaign put five pieces of mail into every household: a pre-walk card, a candidate issue card, a "good guy" postcard, and a last minute endorsement letter signed by 35 members of the community to counter 11th hour "hit pieces" from opponents charging Bruce with wanting vending machines filled with drugs, guns and prostitutes in the elementary school, etc., the usual whitewash. Van Buren and his campaign staff "out-walked, out-talked, out-mailed, out-issued, out-spent and out-thunk" the opposition, and beat an entrenched small town political machine. Dewayne Metheny placed second in a field of six candidates vying for two spots to win a seat on the Auburn City commission. Methenys campaign was managed by veteran LP campaigner Larry Bolin. LP members were also instrumental in helping to defeat sales tax increases in the two counties where our candidates won election. This saved taxpayers over one and a half BILLION dollars. [Thanks to Ron Crickenberger for the above information] The Libertarian Party is America's third-largest political party, with more than 200 office-holders nationwide, including mayors and state legislators. Its platform advocates deep, across-the-board cuts in government spending, the privatization of most government functions, and the repeal of victimless crime laws.
