The remembrance activity, two years after the deaths, took place at what was once the front yard of the compound. Over 70 Branch Davidians including their leader David Koresh and several British and Australian cultists, died in a fire that broke out when authorities ended a standoff and attacked the group's compound. Fifty-one days earlier six of the cult had died in a shootout with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agents. Survivor Clive Doyle led the obvervance by tearfully quoting scripture. He spoke briefly about the six members killed in a shootout with federal enforcement officers and also read a listing of the names of the four ATF agents who died in the incident. Less than a dozen Branch Davidians and sympathisers gathered for the commemoration, which took place under bleak and rainy skies. More than twice that number of reporters and photographers showed up. "A lot of people would like to sweep this under the carpet and forget it ever happened," Doyle said. "Innocent people died and we want justice done. We want to let the people know this should never have happened in this country." The group plans to plant 76 more trees in memory of the other Branch Davidians who died in the fire. Federal agents had stormed the compound of the Branch Davidians to serve search and arrest warrants for suspected weapons violations.
