DEPUTY NEEDLESSLY DIES IN MARIJUANA RAID, SHOOT-OUT Underscores need to end adult marijuana prohibition. On Monday, October 16th in Tacoma, Washington a Pierce County sheriff's deputy, John Bananola, 36, was killed in a marijuana raid gone awry. The Associated Press reports, "A law enforcement informer had bought marijuana from Eggleston 'a number of times'." 25-year-old Brian Eggleston, the suspect, was shot 10 times in the shoot-out. A total of 27 shots were fired, according to the AP story. The entire anti-prohibition movement extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Bananola. His death will be hard on those who loved him, especially his 14-year- old daughter. But let not his death be in vain. Let it show beyond anyone's doubt the terrible situation we have placed our law enforcement in. Because it's become so valuable (up to $400 per ounce), a violent black-market in marijuana has reached a point that someone would kill over a weed. I'm sorry to report, Deputy Bananola is yet another victim of adult drug prohibition. Let's call a cease-fire in this "war" on pot, and end this prohibition before it kills again. Show your support any way you can; and if you live in Oregon and are over 18-years-old: register to vote and sign the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act petition (Call 503- 229-0428 for details). *** END RELEASE *** Floyd Ferris Landrath [signature omitted for electronic transmission] NOTE: The views expressed are those of the author and American Anti-Prohibition League.
