He did a segment on DARE! It started with a graphic that said "DARE...NOT!" This is DARE's 10 year anniversary. He said that after 10 years of exsistence, and being taught in every state, in over 5000(?) schools, that DARE is ineffective in assisting children to refrain from using drugs and that there is NO evidence that it has been at all successful in that portion of it's mission. He did say that the one thing it has improved is the relationship between children and police. Maria Falco came on and made some none too flattering comments about DARE, then Dr. Lee Brown(yes, the new Drug Czar)came on to say that his department was going to launch investigative research to determine what programs, if any, are effective. I wonder what ramifications this will have wrt DARE and what responses it will solicite from the drug warriors. More importantly, what drug education program format is going to help prevent drug ABUSE, promote abstaination for children and responsible USE for adults? I believe we will need something more than what is done in the Netherlands. We need to come up with a comprehensive program outline, and start working on putting it together, as a challenge to programs like DARE. Brian, are you going to post more on the UMASS CRC proposal? --
