These comments were made by Senator Alfonse D'Amato (R-New York) and can be found on page 19 of this document. SHORTCOMINGS OF U.S. POLICY - PAST COOPERATION WITH DRUG TRAFFICKERS, ETC. Now, if good relationships with the United States are not of paramount concern, well, then you go ahead and do what you have to, but we should do what we have to. I am absolutely convinced that we have engaged over the past two decades in a policy that has deceived and entrapped our allies and other countries that we have dealt with, that we have had various branches of our government - CIA, etc. - who have operated, who have worked with drug traffickers for various geopolitical reasons, etc. That is absolutely intolerable. And I view the threat of the domination of this country by the drug culture far more seriously and as more ominous than the threat of communism. We will stand up to communism. We will handle it. And I can't countenance having had, at various times, law enforcement people, or people connected with the intelligence community selling out, allowing because of their so-called sensitive positions the drug traffickers, whether they be major or not, to be shielded, so to speak, to be countenanced, so to speak, by operators from our Government. Incredible. Intolerable.
