Hello! This is the Index for the Three Faces of Mars depicted on the front flap of the Space--1889 Rules. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contents of this directory: 0. README --- This text. 1. faces.index.tar.gz --- The source directory tree tar'ed and gzip'ed. 2. faces.dvi --- TeX DVI output for the index. 3. faces.ps --- Postscript output for the index. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Size considerations: vvvvvvvvvv -rw------- 1 clmeier users 9253 Aug 29 14:37 faces.index.tar.gz -rw------- 1 clmeier users 77536 Aug 29 14:32 faces.dvi -rw------- 1 clmeier users 143648 Aug 29 14:32 faces.ps ^^^^^^^^^^ As you see, the sources amount to just about 9 kilobytes of data, so everybody who can meet the requirements for the sources below (i.e. everybody with a decent Unix environment) please just ftp this file. It's really no trouble to compile the Index, honest! The TeX DVI file is worse: 77 kilobytes. But it's still only half as much as the Postscript file. To save bandwidth, people who have some flavour of TeX, please copy this file. Everybody else has to get the 140 kB Postscript source. Happy ftp'ing! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Requirement for the different files: 1) faces.index.tar.gz: For installation, there is another README in the package. * GNU zip (gzip) --- To unpack. * tar (tar) --- Ditto, package will un'tar to faces.index/* * GNU awk (gawk) --- I don't know if the AWK scripts in this package will be understood by other versions of AWK. If they run with your AWK, you'll have to alter the Makefile. * GNU pic (gpic) --- Things will probably work with other versions of pic that can produce TeX output, since I didn't use specials mentioned in the GNU pic manual page, did I? If you use something named other than gpic, you'll have to make adjustments the Makefile. * TeX --- LaTeX, to be more precise. If you are a member of the tribes who use non-DIN paper, you'll probably want to kill the a4 in the \documentstyle in faces.index/faces.tex. * german.sty --- LaTeX definitions--file, absolutely necessary, or you'll get my snailmail address wrong :-) 2) faces.dvi: * TeX --- Some TeX package should suffice. This should even work with MessyDOS, e.g. with the emTeX package, haven't tested it, though. To be more precise, you only need the dvi driver and fonts for your printer, but I wouldn't recommend installing them only for this file. Perhaps you know somebody with a working TeX installation... For all you members of the tribes who use non-DIN paper, the Index fits on DIN-A4 paper, sorry. Don't worry, AFAIK, this fits on many Red--Indian paper sizes. 3) faces.ps: * Postscript --- Either a printer that understands Postscript or a convenient Postscript interpreter cum device driver for your printer. Ghostscript comes to mind. I have a nice (well, rather losing compared with a PhaserJet, actually :-) printout of the Index made with my trusty Star LC 10 (nine pin dot matrix). Enjoy.
